Richard Knox Walkem was born in Kingston, Ontario on Mary 23, 1880 (He was often called “Knox Walkem.”) His parents were Richard Thomas Walkem (1840-1906) and Emily Ann Henderson (about 1847-1917). Richard Thomas Walkem was a prominent lawyer, who was the brother of George Anthony Walkem (1834-1908), a premier and judge in British Columbia.

Richard Knox Walkem was a brother of George Alexander Walkem, who lived at 2056 Beach Avenue in 1903; 2054 Comox Street from 1904 to 1907, 2044 Comox Street from 1908 to 1910, and 1000 Gilford Street in 1914. Further information appears on the page for George Alexander Walkem.

In 1905 he became a member of the British Columbia bar, and specialized in commercial law.

On March 1, 1913, in Vancouver, Richard married Elenore Ruby Rudolf. She was born in Marie, Quebec on December 4, 1893. (She was often called “Ruby.”) Her parents were George Alden Rudolf and Eleanore Macdonald Forbes.
