Ethel Caswell Burnett (wife of John Lyndon Woolstone)

Remembering Ethel Tibbits, Staff Writer, Richmond Review, August 12, 2013; http://www.bclocalnews.com/community/142709105.html.

“Tibbits helped break barriers,” The Richmond Review, [undated]; https://www.yourlibrary.ca/community/richmondreview/archive/RR20000308/morenews.html. (Searched April 6, 2017.)

“For a woman who was prominent in the pages of The Richmond Review during its first 15 years, not much has been recorded on Ethel Caswell Tibbits, for which the annual Women of the Year Award is named.

We do know that in 1932, she turned the fledgling Richmond Review into the community newspaper of record, a legacy that lives on today.

A few scattered news clippings tell us that Tibbits was “a good storyteller, honest and straightforward,” praised a Vancouver Sun reviewer.

Tibbits studied at Columbia College, than as a journalist for the Vancouver Province and in Calgary. She returned to Lulu Island, where she helped her husband run their store on the corner of Blundell and Railway. In the 1930s, she devoted her time and passion to running The Richmond Review, through the Depression and World War II. She continued as a newspaper woman until her retirement from the business in 1948.

In 1953, she published her first and only book, On To The Sunset, “a true to life account of the trials, tragedies and triumphs of Canadians of half a century and more ago,” according to a Vancouver Sun book review of Dec. 12, 1953. The story was fictitious, but the life of the main character closely followed that of her father, A.E. Burnett, who moved across the country from “the backwoods of Ontario” to settle in Vancouver, where he built a grain elevator in False Creek.

Burnett conducted street missions in downtown Vancouver, and his daughter carried on the family traditions of helping others.

“It seemed she was always either helping someone or else fighting for some cause for which she believed,” said The Review in 1958, when the Kiwanis club of Richmond selected her as its Centennial Year’s Good Citizen. But her commitment to helping others extended beyond Richmond.

“She and her husband, along with their concert party, are still traveling about bringing good music and laughter to others—especially to shut-ins at places like Shaughnessy Hospital,” the tribute continues.

A tribute written in The Richmond Review in 1958 notes, “We could recount many other nice things to say about Mrs. Woolstone (Tibbits), but we know it would only embarrass her.”

Ethel Caswell Tibbits, author, wife, humanitarian, newspaper woman, but most importantly, community leader, died July 20, 1960 at age 70.”
