Charles Jewell Brenton was an accountant and manager with the Standard Milk Company and the Eden Bank Creamery Company.

For some time, he also operated a confectionery.

He later worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway as a timekeeper and accountant.

He was at 1047 Denman Street from 1911 to 1912. He appeared at 1055 Denman Street from 1914 to 1916 and at 1069 Denman Street from 1914 to 1918.

Early Life

Charles was born in Gunnislake, near Calstock, Cornwall, England, about April 28, 1871. His parents were George Jewell Brenton and Ellen Eliza Jackson. George Brenton was a miner.

By 1895, Charles was living in Nanaimo, British Columbia, and he was working as a miner.

Marriage to Ethel Edwards

On March 6, 1897, in Nanaimo, Charles married Ethel Edwards. She was born in Liskeard, Cornwall, in July 1873 (some sources say 1872 or 1874). Her parents were Richard PolglaseEdwards (1842-1922) and Mary Jane (or Elizabeth) Carlyon (about 1845-1931).

It appears that Charles and Ethel stayed in Nanaimo until about 1902. The Nanaimo directories said that Charles continued to be a miner (although the 1901 Canada census described him as a “musician”).

In Vancouver

By 1906, Charles and Ethel were in Vancouver. Charles was a clerk for the Canadian Pacific Railway, and he was living at 1779 West Fourth Avenue. He continued to work for the CPR until about 1910.

Charles and Ethel lived on Denman Street from 1911 to about 1918.

To United States

In 1919, Charles and Ethel moved to Washington State. In 1919, Charles applied for naturalization as a United States citizen.

In 1920 and 1930, Charles and Ethel were in Anacortes, Skagit County, Washington State.

In 1940, Charles and Ethel were in Salinas, California. Charles was an accountant for a dairy.

In 1941, Charles was a bookkeeper for Blanco Dairy Depot in Salinas. He and Ethel were living at 115 Pine Street in Salinas.

Charles died in Salinas on May 18, 1948.

In the early 1950s, Ethel was living on Salt Spring Island in British Columbia. She died in Ganges, Salt Spring Island, on July 13, 1956.

Charles and Ethel had the following children.

Ernest George Jewell Brenton

Ernest George Jewell Brenton was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, on June 25, 1897. He worked as a clerk for the mercantile agency firm of R.G. Dun and Company.

He enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War.

In 1920, he was living with his parents in Anacortes, Washington.

On December 23, 1922, in Victoria, British Columbia, Ernest married Mary Catherine Gyves, who was a school teacher. She was born in July 1894, in Fulford Harbour on South Salt Spring Island. Her parents were Michael Gyves (1833-1920) and Mary Ann Gosselem [Tuwa’H Wiye Gosselem] (1854-1941).

By the early 1950s, Ernest was living in Fulford Harbour on Salt Spring Island, working as a bus driver. He died in Victoria, British Columbia, on January 8, 1968.

Mary died on December 11, 1987, in Ganges on Salt Spring Island.

Audrey Carlyon Brenton

Audrey Carlyon Brenton was born in Vancouver on October 15, 1902.

On June 19, 1926, in Skagit County, Washington, Audrey married William Henry Scovil, who was born in Canada on November 19, 1904.

William became a naturalized United States citizen.

William died in Santa Cruz County, California on March 5, 1957.

Audrey died in San Francisco, California, on July 21, 1976.

(Note: There was also another Charles J. Brenton (1852-1909) in Vancouver; he was the head master of King’s College School, and he appears to be unrelated to Charles Jewell Brenton.)
