Billings, John Gordon (1877-1963)

John Gordon Billings was a lumberman with the North-West Lumber and Commission Company Ltd. He lived at 1872 Barclay Street in 1917 and 1918. Samuel Ashfield, who lived at 1050 Gilford Street from 1914 to 1919, was also associated with the North-West Lumber and Commission Company Ltd.

John Gordon Billings was born on July 28, 1877, in Port Perry, Ontario. His parents were John Billings (a lawyer) and Anna Proudfoot.

He may have been living in Brampton, Ontario, in 1901, and working as a dry goods clerk.

By 1904, he was living in Nelson, British Columbia. In 1904, in Peterborough, Ontario, he married Florence Mary Macdonald. She was born on April 6, 1878, in Lindsay, Ontario. Her parents were John Macdonald and Sophia Jane Butler.

In 1907, he became a member of the board of directors of the Kootenay Lake General Hospital.

In 1911, John appeared in the list of eligible voters on Saltspring Island, British Columbia.

About 1912, he was the general manager of the Yale Columbia Lumber Company in Nelson, British Columbia. He was a member of the Nelson Club.

He lived at 1872 Barclay Street in 1917 and 1918.

In 1921 and 1922, he was living at 1945 Barclay Street.

He was working as an industrial inspector for the Imperial Bank of Canada.

In 1933, John was one of the executors of the estate of Florence’s mother, Sophia Jane McDonald. The estate was involved in a friendly dispute over the meaning of a renewal provision in a lease. The case ended up in the Supreme Court of Canada, which concluded that the lease provisions were not clear enough to have a legal effect.

Florence died in Vancouver on September 16, 1952. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

John died in Vancouver on September 26, 1963. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

John MacDonald Billings was born in British Columbia in May 1908.

He attended the Arts and Science Faculty at the University of British Columbia, in the late 1920s. He later worked for Canada Creosoting Company.

On February 24, 1936, in Vancouver, he married Margaret Adela Erb. She was born on January 11, 1912 in Galt, Ontario. Her father was Albert Edward Erb (1875-1934); her mother was Selena Mary Dietrich (1877-1935).

In 1951, he became the manager of Forest Industrial Relations.

 

Mary Elizabeth Billings

Mary Elizabeth Billings was born in June 1910. She died in Sidney, British Columbia on October 18, 1911.

 

Jane Billings

Jane Billings was born in British Columbia about 1913.

It appears that she did not marry. In 1953, she was living with her parents and was working as a saleswoman.

Mr. Billings was the son of the late John Billings of Port Perry.
