Arkley, Alfred Stanley (1872-1944)

Alfred Stanley Arkley was a bookkeeper, and manager of the canned salmon division of Evans, Coleman, and Evans. He lived at 1037 Denman Street from 1900 to 1944. The Arkley family continued to live at 1037 Denman Street for many years afterwards.

Alfred Stanley Arkley was born on June 18, 1872, in North Shields, Tynemouth, England. His father was John Arkley; his mother was Elizabeth McDougall.

Alfred came to Canada in 1898.

On December 14, 1899, in Oakland, California, he married Jennie Miller. She was born on September 25, 1870, in Lockport, New York. Her father was Julius Frederickson Heileman Miller. Her mother was Mary Osborn.

Alfred died on August 25, 1944, in Vancouver.

Jennie died on May 5, 1951, in Vancouver.

Alfred and Jennie had the following children:

John (“Jack”) MacDougal Arkley

John (“Jack”) MacDougal Arkley was born in Vancouver on November 16, 1900. He became a customs broker.

On June 4, 1929, he married Helen Marie McMurray. She was born in Avondale, New Brunswick, on April 24, 1901. Her father was William Ross McMurray (1876-1937); her mother was Elsie Randena Henderson (1875-1942). Helen was a school teacher.

It appears that Jack and Helen were divorced. Jack later married Florence Annabelle Clark (1911-1980). Jack died in Vancouver on March 9, 1969. Florence died in Vancouver on October 8, 1980.

Helen married Thomas Ballard Bird (1901-1981). Helen died in Vancouver on March 3, 1989. Thomas died in Victoria, British Columbia, on February 14, 1981.

Heileman Osborne Arkley

Heileman Osborne Arkley was born in Vancouver on January 22, 1902. He became an insurance salesman, spending much of his career with Parsons, Brown and Winckler Ltd., and their successors.

On July 16, 1930, in Vancouver, he married Mary Isobel McTavish. She was born on July 15, 1898, in North Easthope Township, Perth, Ontario. Her father was Alexander Fraser Mctavish (1863-1937); her mother was Edith Jane Morrison (1870-1931).

Heileman died in West Vancouver, British Columbia on September 18, 1987.

Mary died in North Vancouver, British Columbia on January 3, 1982.

Stanley Tremaine Arkley

Stanley Tremaine Arkley was born in Vancouver on March 6, 1903.

He graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1925 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

On January 11, 1928, in Vancouver, he married Cecilia Williamson. She was born on October 25, 1904, in Burra Isle, Shetland, Scotland. Her father was James Williamson; her mother was Charlotte Pottinger.

This marriage ended in divorce, probably around 1935, because in 1940, Cecilia was divorced, and was living in Seattle with her son, Philip, who was born on September 25, 1934, in Spokane, Washington.

By 1938, Stanley was married to Rose Edith Adatto. She was born in Washington State on June 10 (or May 8) 1913. Her father was Sam Adatto. In 1940, Stanley was living in Seattle, Washington. He was the district manager for a publishing house. Stanley and Rose’s son Alfred (probably born on January 6, 1937) and their daughter Allegra (born about 1939), were living with them.

On May 28, 1976, the University of British Columbia awarded Stanley an honorary Doctor of Laws degree for services to the university.

The University of British Columbia offers an annual Stanley T. Arkley Scholarship in Librarianship.

Stanley died in Bellevue, Washington, in June 1983.

Rose died in Bellevue, in August 1981.

Besides Alfred and Allegra, Stanley and Rose had a son, Stanley Tremaine Arkley, Junior, who was born on July 14, 1940. He went to Harvard University and he received a master’s degree from Columbia University. He served with the Peace Corps for two years in Sierra Leone and was teaching in Lake Washington High School in 1965.

Another of Stanley’s sons was Richard Arkley. Richard was the best man in November 1965, in Bellevue, Washington, when Alfred Stanley Arkley married Harriet Alice Harvey.

Adaline Arkley (daughter of Alfred Stanley Arkley)

Adaline Arkley was born in Vancouver on April 10, 1904.

In 1920 and 1925, she was a student, and was living with her parents.

By 1930, she was a stenographer, still living at home.

She never married, and she continued to live at 1037 Denman Street until she died on March 15, 1950.

The Title and Degree of Doctor Of Laws (honoris causa) Conferred at Congregation, May 28, 1976: Stanley Tremaine Arkley, http://www.library.ubc.ca/archives/hdcites/hdcites7.html

“Mr. Chancellor, we often boast of the loyalty of our students and our alumni. In Stanley Tremaine Arkley we have an alumnus whose services to the University throughout his career have been unsurpassed. He graduated in 1925, which means that he spent his undergraduate days in the old shacks at Fairview where the smallness of the student-body produced an unparallelled devotion to their University. Stanley Arkley from the beginning participated in the building of a strong Alumni Association that would collaborate in the growth of the University. Living in Seattle, he was able to maintain the closest ties with his Alma Mater. He was prominent among those who organised the Friends of the University in the United States and he became their first President. His home served as the business-office for the Friends and he and his wife were chiefly responsible for the many bequests and gifts and scholarships that came from his adopted country. A bibliophile himself, he has displayed a special and tangible interest in the Library, an interest that reached its culmination recently in the presentation of a notable collection of children’s literature, along with a fund for its maintenance. The University and the Alumni are proud of him. I therefore ask you, Mr. Chancellor, in recognition of his singular and unswerving love for the University of British Columbia, to confer the degree Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, upon Stanley Tremaine Arkley.”
