Alexander, Arthur (1884-1942)

Arthur Alexander was a lawyer.

He lived at 875 Chilco Street in 1915 and 1916. He was at 885 Chilco Street from 1920 to 1927.

 

Early Life

Arthur Alexander was born in Liverpool, England, on March 9, 1884. (Several sources say that he was born in Scotland.)

His parents were Frederick Charles Alexander (born about 1850 in Scotland) and Ellen Esther Popley (born December quarter 1856, Lymington district, Hampshire).

Frederick Alexander was a divisional officer for the British Inland Revenue service.

Arthur graduated from Edinburgh University. In 1901 he was an apprentice lawyer in Kilmarnock, Scotland.

 

To Vancouver

It appears that Arthur arrived in Canada about 1906.

He first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1911. He was living at the Western Club, and he was in a law partnership with Frederick William Tiffin (1873-1947).

Marriage to Mabel Fraser

On June 2, 1915, in Vancouver, Arthur married Mabel McGillvray Fraser. She was born in Brandon, Manitoba on March 27, 1891. Her parents were George Valentine Fraser and Annie Marie Wastie.

Military Service

Arthur served with the Royal Navy in the First World War.

He was counsel for the commission of inquiry to deal with ships taken over by the Canadian Navy for service on the Pacific coast.

 

Law Practice and Later Life

For several years, Arthur continued his law partnership with Frederick William Tiffin.

Later he was in partnership with George Lovat Fraser, who was also his brother-in-law.

In 1934-1935 he was the president of the Vancouver Bar Association [see: Vancouver Bar Association: Our History; https://vancouverbar.ca/about-us/history/.]

Arthur died in Vancouver on October 17, 1942.

Arthur and Mabel had three children.

 

Jean McGillivray Alexander

Jean (“Jeanie”) McGillivray Alexander was born in Vancouver on December 26, 1916.

In December 1937, she became engaged to William Fitz-Walter Foster.

William was born in Revelstoke, British Columbia on October 25, 1909. His parents were William Wasbrough Foster (1876-1954) and Olive Stewart (1886-1981).

William Fitz-Walter Foster died in Vancouver on April 5, 1990.

Ian Alexander

It appear that Ian Alexander was born on June 9, 1922. He was unmarried in 1942 and 1945.

 

Joan Esther Alexander

Joan Esther Alexander was born in Vancouver on November 9, 1927.

In July 1952, she married Colin D’Arcy Robert Weatherbe.
