George Douglas Travis was a bookkeeper and commercial traveller. He lived at 1110 Denman Street from 1903 to 1915. His wife, Cora, and his son, John Travis, lived at 1110 Denman Street from 1916 to 1921.

 

Family Background

George Douglas Travis was born in St. John, New Brunswick in January 1859. His parents were Hugh John Travis (1821-1883) and Elizabeth Jane Robertson (1828–1901).

In 1881, he was living with his parents in St. John. He was working as a clerk.

 

Marriage to Cora Climo

On June 30, 1887, in St. John, New Brunswick, George married Corapatia (“Cora”) Peters Climo. She was born in St. John on March 9, 1867. Her parents were John Saunders Climo (1835–1924) and Mary Ann Daniel (1826-1920). John Climo was a printer who married Mary Ann Daniel in Penzance, Cornwall on August 6, 1857.

The Climo family moved to New Brunswick, where John Climo became a successful photographer and landscape artist.

Mary Ann Climo died in St. John on June 1, 1920.

John Climo died in 1924.

 

Life after Marriage and Move to Western Canada

In 1891, George and Cora were in St. John, along with their son, John. George was a grocer.

George first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1895. He was a bookkeeper and he was living at 1113 Seymour Street.

By 1902, George was back in Vancouver. He died in Vancouver on April 12, 1915. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Cora died in Crescent Beach (Surrey), British Columbia on February 10, 1946. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

George and Cora had the following children.

 

John Hugh Douglas Travis

John Hugh Douglas Travis was born in St. John, New Brunswick, on August 18. 1890.

He worked as a miner, logger, and stevedore.

He did not marry.

He died in Portland Canal, near Stewart, British Columbia. (One source says that he died at Hyder, Alaska.) He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

 

Mary Violet Elizabeth Travis

Mary Violet Elizabeth Travis was born in Vancouver on January 25, 1895. (She was often called “Violet.”)

On October 24, 1917, in Vancouver, she married Knud Jorgensen, who was a bank manager. He was born in Copenhagen, Denmark on November 15, 1887. His parents were Sigismund Jorgensen and Maria Christina Maigaard.

Knud and Violet lived for a time in Peace River, British Columbia. Later, they moved to Toronto, Ontario. Knud worked at the Toronto City Hall before becoming the manager of the Toronto Municipal Employees Credit Union.

Knud died in Toronto on January 16, 1957. He was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto.
