Charles Preston was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, England on March 17, 1871. His parents were Elijah Preston (1840-1908) and Maria Illingworth (1840-1923).

To United States

According to some sources, Charles moved to the United States about 1888. However, it appears that he was still living in England with his father at the time of the 1891 England and Wales census.

Marriage to Myrletta (Myrtle) Reason

On September 4, 1914, in Toledo, Ohio, Charles married Myrletta Louisa Reason (who was sometimes called “Myrtle,” “Mertie” and “Merta”).

She was born at Unidalla, Livingston County, Michigan on June 20, 1884. Her family lived for a time in Pinckney, Michigan. Both places are about 50 kilometres west of downtown Detroit. (Some sources give Myrletta’s birthplace as Pontiac, Michigan and her birth year as 1891.)

Myrletta’s Parents

Myrletta’s parents were Albert Reason (1850–1920) and Arlettie L. Green (1854–1940).

Albert Reason was an inventor who received several patents for his inventions.

In 1894, Myrletta’s mother was badly burned in a household fire, but she later recovered.

Albert Reason died in Vancouver on November 1, 1920.

Myrtella’s Previous Marriage

Myrtella’s marriage to Charles Preston was not her first. On June 4, 1906, in Detroit, Michigan, she married Edward Victor Holton, who was a funeral director. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on July 19, 1872. His parents were John Vincent Holton (1839–1884) and Mary Stinson.

The marriage application stated that Myrletta had not been married before. However, another marriage index gives her name as “Myrtella L Reason Hamilton.”

“Michigan, County Marriages, 1820-1940,” database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VNL8-N8G : 11 May 2018), Edward V Holton and Myrtella L Reason Hamilton, 4 Jun 1906; citing reference ID , various county clerks and libraries, Michigan; FHL microfilm 1,377,649.

In the 1900 United States census, Myrtella and her brother, Laverne, were in the same household as Emma Hamilton. It is not certain that there was a marriage between Myrtella and a member of this Hamilton family.

Edward Holton’s Marriage History

Myrtella’s husband, Edward Holton, had also been married before, to Rilla Estelle Fanning Grosse. (She was often called “Estelle” or “Stella.”) The wedding was in Detroit on April 14, 1902. The newspaper accounts of the wedding suggested that the marriage was going to be happy and successful.

Detroit Free Press, April 16, 1902, page 10, columns 3-4.

However, the marriage did not go well. By February 1903, Edward was the defendant in a divorce case, on the basis of “non-support.” For a time, Estelle discontinued the case.

In December 1903, Estelle and Edward had a stillborn daughter.

The marriage continued to be  unsuccessful, however. By November 1904, Estelle had started a new action for divorce.

Detroit Free Press (Detroit, Michigan) November 20, 1904, page 4, column 5.

By November 1905, Estelle’s and Edward’s divorce was final. This time, the grounds were “extreme cruelty and non-support.”

On August 17, 1910, in Detroit, Estelle married Orrin A. Munn (1852-1949). Orrin died in 1949.

Estelle died on January 24, 1955, in Snover, Michigan (about 100 kilometres north of Detroit).

Edward’s and Myrtle’s Marriage

After Edward’s and Myrtle’s marriage in 1906, things seemed to go well for a time.

Edward became the manager of Dick and Findlater, which was a Detroit funeral home.

Detroit Free Press (Detroit, Michigan), December 10, 1907, page 11, column 1.

However, by December 1908, Edward had gone missing, along with funds from a local troop of the Michigan National Guard.

Detroit Free Press (Detroit, Michigan), December 21, 1908, page 5, column 3.

Shortly afterward, auditors discovered that Edward was also responsible for embezzling funds from Dick and Findlater. Myrtella moved to her sister’s home on Jefferson Avenue in Detroit.

Detroit Free Press (Detroit, Michigan); December 31, 1908, page 5, column 5.

It is not clear what became of Edward Holton.

Charles and Myrletta: Life after Marriage

After their marriage, Charles and Myrletta seemed to have a successful life in Vancouver.

They often travelled to the United States, and they entertained visitors and relatives at their home in Vancouver. (Jerry Reason was Myrletta’s sister, Geraldine.)

By the fall of 1922, Charles and Myrletta were divorced.
