James William Troup was a steamship captain, ship designer, and businessman. He lived at 1833 Haro Street in 1902.

Early Life

James William Troup was born in Portland, Oregon on February 5, 1855. His parents were William Henry Troup (1827-1882) and Eliza Jane Turnbull (1836-1920). (Some sources say that James was born in Vancouver, Washington, which is just north of Portland. It appears that the correct birthplace is Portland, and that the Troup family moved to Vancouver sometime after James was born.)

William Henry Troup was a steamboat captain who died in Vancouver, Washington, on April 8, 1882.

Special Dispatch to the Oregonian.

South Ainsworth, W. T., Aug 14. – Capt. T. J. Stump died very suddenly at 10:30 yesterday morning in the pilot house of the steamer Spokane about five miles above Pine Tree rapids. Capt. VanPelt was at the wheel at the time. The steamer returned with his body and will reach Celilo about six o’clock this evening. While Capt. VanPelt was attending the dying man the boat drifted on a rock, sustaining slight damage.

The Dalles, Aug. 14. 8 P.M. – The body of Capt. Stump was brought here this evening, where it will be buried with masonic honors, he being a past master.

[Capt. Stump came to Oregon in 1862 from California, where he had been employed by the California Steam Navigation Co. as captain and pilot on the Sacramento river and in San Francisco bay. Since then he was in the employ of the O.S.N. Co. and it successors, most of the time on the upper Columbia and Snake rivers. He was a very competent steamboat man and a good citizen. He leaves a wife and three children – Mr. Fred Stump, Mrs. Capt. James W. Troupe, and a daughter of 13. The family reside at The Dalles. [The Oregonian, 15 Aug.  1881, p. 3.]”
