Bailey, Leonard Wilfred (1880-1951)

Leonard Wilfred Bailey was a grocer. He lived at 2032 Beach Avenue from 1904 to 1906.

 

Early Life

Leonard Wilfred Bailey was born on May 4, 1880, in Greenwich, England. His parents were Edward Thomas Bailey (1838-1893) and Mary Jane Marchant.

 

To Vancouver

Leonard arrived in Vancouver about 1903, along with his brother, Herbert Stanger Bailey.  Leonard established a grocery business at 909 Georgia Street; Herbert was a bookkeeper for the business.

 

Marriage to Margaret May McEwen

On January 12, 1904, in Vancouver, Leonard married Margaret May McEwen. She was born on January 12, 1878, in Simcoe County, Ontario. Her parents were Neil McEwen (about 1842-1898) and Rosina Gardner (1848-1921).

 

Business Life

Leonard later operated grocery stores on the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia.

In the 1920s, the Baileys lived for some time at Roberts Creek. They returned to Vancouver in the late 1920s.

 

Later Life

In 1938, Leonard and Margaret were living at 3328 Wellington Street in Vancouver. Leonard  was a salesman.

About 1939, Leonard and Margaret moved to Gibson’s Landing, British Columbia. They continue to live there throughout the 1940s. In 1945, Leonard was a salesman for Rawleigh’s Products, a company that sold a line of home remedies, seasonings and spices, flavorings and extracts.

Margaret died in Vancouver on September 24, 1950. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Leonard died at Gibson’s Landing on May 14, 1951. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Clyde Kenwood Bailey

Clyde Kenwood Bailey was born in Vancouver on September 16, 1911.

He died in Vancouver on February 2, 1928. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Rolph Bailey

Rolph Bailey was born in Vancouver on September 25, 1912. (It appears that he was called “Ronald Leonard Bailey” in earlier years.)

In 1941, he moved to the Yukon Territory, where he worked as a bookkeeper in Dawson City and Whitehorse.

He served with the Canadian military forces during the Second World War.

After the war, he returned to Whitehorse.

In 1948, at Whitehorse, he married Florence Josephine Humphreys, who was born about 1915.

In 1951, Rolph was a candidate to become an alderman on the Whitehorse municipal council.

Rolph later worked as an insurance agent in Whitehorse.
