John James Harford was a proprietor of the Vancouver Canoe Company. He lived at 1840 Georgia Street from 1906 to 1910. His brother, Frank Harford, was a carpenter, contractor and salesman who lived at 1840 Georgia Street in 1911 and 1912.

John James Harford

John James Harford was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, on September 17, 1871. His parents were James Harford (1845-1919) and Mary Ann Hinchcliffe(1846-1928).

In 1881 and 1891, John was living with his parents.

In 1893, he married Emma Woodhead. It appears that she was born in Sheffield on October 10, 1872.

By 1900 John and Emma were living in Vancouver.

In 1906, John was a proprietor of the Vancouver Canoe Company, which sold Detroit Auto-Marine engines. About 1908 the Ferro Machine and Foundry Company bought the Detroit Auto-Marine Company.

About 1909, John organized the Western Engine and Supply Company Limited to distribute the Ferro Machine engines. (Further information appears on the page for Western Engine and Supply Company Limited). The business did not last long, and the company’s finances became part of the investigations following the collapse of the Dominion Trust Company.

Emma died in Vancouver on June 29, 1910. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

On August 15, 1918, in Vancouver, John married Florence Littleton. She was born on October 4, 1898, in Waterloo, Lancashire, England. Her parents were Albert Littleton and Ann Bates Bryce.

In the 1921 Canada census, John and Florence were living on Galiano Island, British Columbia. John was working as a machinist.

John ran a series of marine-related businesses in Vancouver and later became a merchant.

In 1932 he was the president of Protective Bailiffs.

In 1936 he was a dry goods merchant.

In 1937 he was the president of Commercial Jobbers, a business that sold fire sale goods.

John died in Vancouver on October 31, 1947. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Florence died in Vancouver on July 5, 1968. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

It appears that John and Emma Woodhead did not have any children.

Marjorie (“Joy”) Harford

Marjorie (“Joy”) Harford was born at Ganges, Salt Spring Island, British Columbia on August 11, 1921.

In 1943 she was an artist with Ron Berry Studios in Vancouver. She was living with her parents.

By 1947 she was married to a Mr. Partington. Her home address was “care of Air France, Gander, Newfoundland.”

Frank Harford

Frank Harford was born on April 17, 1882, in Scarborough, Yorkshire.

In 1891, he was living with his parents in Yorkshire, England

He sailed to Canada in May 1900. He arrived in Quebec City, on his way to Vancouver.

Frank first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1901. He was a laborer for the British Columbia Electric Railway, and he was living in the Mount Pleasant area of Vancouver.

On December 22, 1903, in Vancouver, Frank married Mabel Cornelia Cutler. She was born in Hamilton, Ontario, on March 23, 1885. Her parents were Charles Roy Cutler (1846-1932) and Cornelia Ann Stewart (1850-1928). (Charles’s and Cornelia’s marriage had ended in the early 1890s, and Charles re-married in 1892. He lived in New York State with his second family. Cornelia often described herself as a widow.)

Frank worked at a series of jobs in Vancouver. In 1904 he was a millman. In 1905 he was a carpenter. In 1908 he was a contractor. From 1910 to 1911 he was a salesman with the Western Engine and Supply Company. In 1914 he was a contractor.

He was on active military service during the First World War, although he does not appear in the Canadian Expeditionary Force database.

After the war, he worked as a sailor, gas engineer, and carpenter. He also seems to have spent time as a missionary.

Frank and Mabel lived much of their later years on Vancouver Island in British Columbia.

Mabel died in Nanaimo, British Columbia, on November 27, 1955. She was buried in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens in Nanaimo.

Frank died in Vancouver on October 18, 1965. He was buried in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens in Nanaimo.

Frank and Mabel had the following children.

 

James Vernon Harford

James Vernon Harford was born in Vancouver on March 5, 1905. (He was sometimes called “Vernon.”)

He worked as a dry cleaner.

On November 3, 1928, in Victoria, British Columbia, he married Alice Edythe Conway. She was born in Victoria on September 16, 1902. Her parents were Edward Conway (1868-1926) and Alice Atkins (1882-1958).

Vernon and Alice were killed in a car accident in Cobble Hill, British Columbia on April 27, 1962. They were buried in Hatley Memorial Gardens in Esquimalt, British Columbia.

It appears that they did not have any children.

 

Marion Cornelia Harford

Marion Cornelia Harford was born in Port Moody, British Columbia, on October 22, 1906.

In 1911 and 1921 she was living with her parents.

On June 22, 1928, in Vancouver, she married Fred Ferdinand Alphonse Hookstra. He was born in Ostende, Belgium, apparently on January 11, 1901. His parents were George Hookstra and Alida Yonking.

In 1929, Fred was living at 1821 Main Street. He was working as a janitor.

About 1930, Fred began to use the name “Ferdinand Bockhodt.”

It appears that Ferdinand was a citizen of Belgium at the time of his marriage to Marion. As a result, Marion was also deemed to be a Belgian citizen. In 1930, Ferdinand and Marion became naturalized citizens of Canada.

By 1950, Fred (Ferdinand) and Marion were living at 672 East Eighth Avenue.

By 1954, Ferdinand and Marion appeared in separate listings in the Vancouver directory.

Their marriage was dissolved on November 20, 1959.

Marion later married George Charles Faulkner. She died in Vancouver on April 14, 1972. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Ferdinand died in Vancouver on March 26, 1990. He was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Ferdinand and Marion had the following children.

Ralph Paul Bockhodt

Ralph Paul Bockhodt was born in Vancouver on April 9, 1932. He never married.

Although he worked as a logger for some time, he had a troubled life, and he spent time in prison and in mental health facilities.

He died on February 10, 1968, while he was an inmate at the British Columbia Penitentiary. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

 

Ruth Marion Bockhodt

Ruth Marion Bockhodt was born on March 13, 1935.

She died on January 24, 1936, at the Haro Street Infants’ Hospital in Vancouver. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Frank Gordon Harford

Frank Gordon Harford was born in Vancouver on September 28, 1908.

In 1911 and 1921 he was living with his parents.

He became a conductor for the British Columbia Electric Railway.

On August 21, 1929, in Vancouver, he married Annie Winnifred Rigby, who was an office clerk. She was born in Leigh, Lancashire, England, on October 21, 1909. Her parents were James Rigby and Elizabeth Hindley.

Frank later worked as a plumbing contractor in the Okanagan region of British Columbia.

Frank died in Summerland, British Columbia, on May 19, 1988. He was buried in Kaleden Cemetery in Kaleden, British Columbia.

Annie died on February 8, 1999. She was buried in Kaleden Cemetery.

 

Evelyn Mabel Harford

Evelyn Mabel Harford was born in British Columbia about 1914. (She was sometimes called “Mabel Evelyn Harford.”)

In 1921 she was living with her parents.

On August 25, 1932, in Bellingham, Washington, Evelyn married John Maddams. He was born in Edmonton, Alberta, on January 17, 1909. His parents were Ernest Maddams and Tina Phium.

This marriage ended in divorce. On February 1, 1936, in Bellingham, John married Ruby Adrena Marie Dolman. She was born in Chilliwack on June 23, 1917. Her parents were George Charles Dolman and Edith May Chadsey. John died in Chilliwack on April 11, 1986. Ruby died on September 3, 2000.

On February 23, 1936, in Vancouver, Evelyn married Frank Barry Smith, who was a seaman. He was born in New Brunswick on April 27, 1905. His parents were Hugh Smith and Hilda Grant.

No further information is available for Evelyn. She may have been living in North Vancouver in 1937.

Doreen Patricia Harford

Doreen Patricia Harford was born in Chilliwack, British Columbia, about 1915.

On January 23, 1934, in Chilliwack, she married Leslie Jasper Bowman, who was a labourer. He was born in Chilliwack on March 29, 1912. His parents were John Walter Bowman and Margaret Elizabeth Leslie.

Leslie later worked as a painter. He died in Ladysmith, British Columbia, on October 11, 1994.

Doreen died in Nanaimo, British Columbia, on July 19, 2001.

 

Stewart Beatty Harford

Stewart Beatty Harford was born in Vancouver on October 9, 1916.

He worked in the construction industry.

He married Moreen Alfreda Wingfield, who was born in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan, on April 16, 1923.

Stewart and Moreen lived for some time in Qualicum Beach, British Columbia.

Stewart died in Nanaimo, British Columbia on December 27, 1991.

Moreen died at Westbank, British Columbia, on October 13, 2011.

Stewart and Moreen were buried at Qualicum Beach Cemetery.

 

Grace Carman Harford

Grace Carman Harford was born in Vancouver on May 8, 1922.

She worked as a housemaid.

On May 8, 1941, in Vancouver, she married Thomas Donkin Grindlay, who was a wire rope splicer. He was born in Vancouver on March 9, 1919. His parents were Thomas Gilbert Grindlay and Elizabeth Ann Donkin.

Grace died in Burnaby, British Columbia, on August 15, 1994.

Thomas died on March 29, 2004.

He was predeceased by his wife Grace in 1994 and is survived by one sister, Dolly McGougan of Vancouver; one son, Bill Grindlay (Mary) of Aldergrove, and three daughters, Carol Martin of Mission, Dianne (Gord) Graves of Port Coquitlam, and Beverly Pickering of Port Coquitlam. Also survived by eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Tom was a life member of Composite Masonic Lodge, Past District Deputy Grand Master. He was a wire rope splicer. He and his father worked together to splice the first ski lift on Grouse Mountain just after the Second World War. He spent over 25 years splicing cables for the tugboat industry, retiring from Kingcome Navigation in 1990. He was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren and lived his entire life in the Collingwood area of Vancouver. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 3rd at 12 noon at First Memorial Funeral Chapel, 602 Kingsway, Vancouver. ‘We love you Dad.’”
