Burton, George Guy (1857-after 1911)

George Guy Burton was a clerk with the Vancouver Gas Company and the proprietor of the Morton Rooms. He lived at 1813 Morton Avenue in 1910 and at 1086 Denman Street in 1911.

George was born in England in March 1857. It appears that his father was Samuel Warren Burton (1820-1884), who was born in Sandwich, Kent, and that George’s mother, Eliza Frances, was born in Ireland about 1829.

It appears that George went to Tonbridge School from 1870 to 1875. He worked for the Munster Bank and later for the Munster and Leinster Bank in Ireland.

In 1886, in Cork, Ireland, he married Lillian Wright [her middle name appears as Bendelicia in some sources]. She was born in April 1879 in Ireland.

It appears that George and Lillian were in Ireland until at least 1901.

About 1907, they came to Canada. George and Lillian appeared in the Vancouver directories from 1908 to 1911.

In 1908, George was a clerk for the Vancouver Gas Company. Lillian was an apprentice with Isabel Luke, who was a milliner at 740 Robson Street.

In 1910, George was living at the Morton Rooms at 1813 Morton Avenue, where he was also the proprietor.

In 1911, George was at 1086 Denman Street. In the 1911 Canada census, his occupation is not clear, but it appears to be “auditor.” Lillian’s occupation is “nurse.”

After 1911, there is no sign of George and Lillian in the Vancouver directories.

George and Lillian had the following children.

Lillian Georgina Burton

Lillian Georgina Burton was born about 1887 in Cork, Ireland.  On November 17, 1910, in New Westminster, British Columbia, she married William Jethro Walters. He was born about 1868 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He parents were Henry Walters and Ellen Mitchell.

Warren Samuel Burton

Warren Samuel Burton was born in Cork, Ireland in March 1895. In 1911 he was an employee of the Imperial Skating Rink, which was at the corner of Denman Street and Beach Avenue.
