Henry Havelock Allingham was a telegraph operator and manager who lived at 821 Broughton Street from 1897 to 1904.

Family Background and Early Life

Henry (“Harry”) Havelock Allingham was born in New Brunswick on January 21, 1863.

In the early 1880s, Harry was working as a telegraph operator in Fort Worth, Texas. According to some sources, he became acquainted with Minnie Alice Jane Odell, who was a telegraph operator in St. John, New Brunswick. (Harry and Minnie may have known each other before, since they were both from New Brunswick.)

Minnie was born in New Brunswick on December 25, 1864. In 1871 and 1881, Minnie was living in St. John with her mother and her younger sister, Emma.

Harry and Minnie carried on a courtship by telegraph and by mail at first, until they were able to meet in person in Chicago, Illinois.

They were married in Chicago on November 29, 1883, and they moved to live in Fort Worth.

Champaign Daily Gazette (Champaign, Illinois), November 28, 1883, page 3, column 4.

A more melodramatic version of the story appeared in the Buffalo Evening News (and in other United States newspapers). Contrary to the story in the news article, Minnie was not an only child; she had a sister named Emma, who was also a telegraph operator. It is not clear that Harry’s father was a slave owner or that he was killed in the United States Civil War.

Buffalo Evening News (Buffalo, New York), December 12, 1883, page 3, column 1.

In 1891, Henry and Minnie were living in St. John, New Brunswick, along with their daughter, Maude Isabell. Minnie’s mother, Isabell Odell, was also living with them.

To Vancouver

Henry first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1895. He was a telegraph operator, and he was living at 811 Richards Street.

Williams’ Official BC Directory, 1895, page 528.

He lived at the following addresses in Vancouver.

1895811 Richards Street
18961200 block of Barclay Street
1897 to 1904821 Broughton Street

The Canadian Pacific Railway telegraph office was at 646 Granville Street until about 1900.

Life in Vancouver

Harry was interested in several sports, including cycling and lacrosse.

Vancouver Province, September 21, 1895, page 15, column 2.

Harry’s devotion to lacrosse was intense and long lasting. He often promoted the sport, both in Canada and abroad. He was the honorary president of the Vancouver Intermediate lacrosse club.

Vancouver Province, March 4, 1899, page 7, column 2.

Health Issues

In 1900, Harry went to Tranquille, near Kamloops, British Columbia, to treat an unspecified health condition. Tranquille was known as a centre for treating tuberculosis, so that may have been the reason for Harry’s stay there.

Vancouver Daily World, May 11, 1900, page 5, column 3.

He later returned to his duties in Vancouver.

In 1902, he was switching storage batteries on the telegraph system when his hand contacted one of the metal parts of the battery system. He received a severe electrical shock, although he recovered fairly quickly.

Vancouver Province, January 10, 1902, page 1, column 7.

Leaving Vancouver

In 1904, Harry obtained new employment in London, England. He and his family left Vancouver for London in October 1904.

Vancouver Province, September 8, 1904, page 3, column 3.

The house at 821 Broughton Street was for sale, and Harry sold the contents of the house.

Vancouver Province, September 10, 1904, page 10, column 7.
Vancouver Province, September 29, 1904, page 8, column 2.

On October 3, the lacrosse club presented Harry with a gold-headed ebony cane as a going-away gift.

Vancouver Province, October 4, 1904, page 1, column 7.

It appears that the house at 821 Broughton Street did not sell right away, because it was for lease in December 1904.

Vancouver Province, December 3, 1904, page 10, column 6.

To England and Later Life

Harry and Minnie, along with their children and Minnie’s mother, sailed on S.S. Arabic from New York to Liverpool, England. They arrived on October 30, 1904.
