Northwood, James Henry (1877-1944)

James Henry Northwood was a butcher and taxi operator. He lived at 1964 Georgia Street from 1920 to 1924.

He was born on October 7, 1877, in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, England, west of Nottingham. His father was John Northwood. His mother was Elizabeth Jones.

On November 16, 1898, in Cossall, Nottinghamshire, he married Elizabeth Annie Syson. She was born in Ilkeston on September 20, 1875. Her father was Alexander Syson. Her mother was Louisa Shaw.

James served with British forces during the war in South Africa.

He arrived in Canada about 1911. He was working as a butcher in Victoria, British Columbia.

In 1916, James enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve in the First World War. He was living in Michel, British Columbia.

He first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1918. He was living at 1647 East 40th Avenue. He was on active service in the military forces.

In 1919, he was at 2250 East 42nd Avenue, and working as a meat cutter.

In 1920, he was living at 1964 Georgia Street, and operating Khaki Taxi and Transfer.

From 1921 to 1924, he was operating a meat market at 1711 Robson Street. He was living at 1964 Georgia Street.

In 1925, he moved to 8143 Fremlin Street. His butcher shop was at 1103 Robson Street.

The family continued to live in the Vancouver area through the 1930s into the 1940s.

Elizabeth died in Vancouver on January 18, 1934. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

James died in Vancouver on December 9, 1944. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Sydney Henry Northwood

 

Sydney Henry Northwood was born in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, on February 1, 1900. He died in Nottinghamshire, England in 1908.

 

Lillian Elizabeth Northwood

Lillian Elizabeth Northwood was born in Nottingham, England, on June 11, 1906.

By 1923, she was working as a stenographer for Bradstreets in Vancouver.

On April 2, 1931, she married Harold Smith. He was born on April 26, 1900, in Llantwit Major, Wales. His father was George Smith. His mother was Clara Watkinson.

Lillian died in Richmond, British Columbia, on June 18, 1980.

Harold died in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, on September 29, 1993.

 

Dorothie Louise Northwood

Dorothie Louise Northwood was born in Michel, British Columbia, on February 6, 1916.

In the late 1930s, she worked as a dressmaker.

On June 30, 1938, in Vancouver, she married William Wallace Leslie Heron, who was a salesman. He was born in Vancouver on March 18, 1912. His father was William Heron. His mother was Lillian Evelyn Mellon.

William later became a custodian engineer for the Vancouver school board.

Dorothie died in Duncan, British Columbia, on January 8, 1980.

William died in Nanaimo, British Columbia, on January 25, 1989.
