Elizabeth Todd Cambie was the widow of Alexander Jeffrey Cambie. She lived at 1818 Robson Street from 1901 to 1928. (Alexander Cambie was a brother of Henry John Cambie, who lived at 1918 Haro Street from 1910 to 1928.)

 

Early Life

Alexander Jeffrey Cambie was born on March 13, 1835 , in Castletown, Tipperary County, Ireland. His parents were Charles Cambie (1800-1867) and Jane Disney (1799-1864). Charles and Jane were married on June 15, 1827.

The Cambie family moved to Canada in 1852. Charles became the registrar of the audit branch of the finance department.

Jane Cambie died on November 7, 1864. She was buried in Quebec City.

Alexander Jeffrey Cambie’s Life in Canada

Alexander moved with his parents from Ireland to Canada about 1852. He later went to school in Crewe, England.

He then went to the United States, including where he spent time in Chicago and later became a naval cadet in a training ship which was moored off Brooklyn, New York.

He went to Peterborough, Ontario, where he was the clerk of the court. He later had a series of civil service positions with the patent branch of the Department of Agriculture. In later years he was the acting Deputy Commissioner of Patents.

He was a member of the A.F. & A.M. (Ancient Free and Accepted Masons).

 

Marriage to Elizabeth Todd Poston

On June 6, 1866, in Quebec City, Quebec, Alexander married Elizabeth Todd Poston. She was born in Quebec City on February 13, 1845. Her parents were William Poston (1812-1871) and Susan Todd (1807-1888).

After Marriage

From the late 1860s to the 1880s, Alexander and Elizabeth lived in Ottawa.

Alexander continued his work as a civil servant. By the late 1880s he was the acting Deputy Commissioner of Patents, whose office was then part of the Department of Agriculture.

Alexander died in Ottawa on February 19, 1887. He was buried in Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa.

Elizabeth’s Later Life

Elizabeth and most of her children lived in Ottawa until the late 1890s.

By 1901, Elizabeth was at 1818 Robson Street in Vancouver.

Elizabeth lived at 1818 Robson Street until 1928. She died in Vancouver on May 25, 1928. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Charles Cambie was born in Ottawa, Ontario on January 22, 1871.

He worked as a banker. In 1901 he was living in Victoria, British Columbia, and he was an accountant with the Bank of Commerce.

On October 9, 1907, in Toronto, Ontario, he married Cecil Evelyn Boulton Nordheimer. She was born in Toronto on September 23, 1881 (The name on her birth registration was “Cecil Dagmar Boulton Nordheimer.”) Her parents were Samuel Nordheimer (1824-1912) and Edith Louise Boulton (1848-1912).

Samuel and Edith Nordheimer were prominent and wealthy members of Toronto society. Samuel was the head of the Nordheimer Piano and Music Company and the German consul for Ontario. Edith was active in many philanthropic endeavours, including the Red Cross and the Victorian Order of Nurses. The Nordheimers lived in a vast estate called “Glen Edyth.”

Charles Cambie had a long career with the Bank of Commerce. In 1911, he was the manager of the Ottawa branch of the bank. In 1915 he became the manager of the bank’s branch in London, England.

He retired from the bank in 1931. There were rumours that he might become the deputy minister of finance, but his ill health prevented him from taking that position.

Alexander Jeffrey Cambie was born in Ottawa on October 21, 1877. (Some sources give October 31, 1878 as his birthdate.) (He was often called “Jeffrey” or “Jeff.”)

From 1881 to 1891 he lived in the family home in Ottawa.

By 1901 he was in Vancouver, along with his mother and the rest of his family.

In 1902, he was working for the Canadian Pacific Railway in Victoria, British Columbia. For much of his career with the C.P.R., he was a freight agent.

Eileen Mary Cambie

Eileen Mary Cambie was born in Cacouna, Quebec on September 2, 1879.

On August 8, 1906, in Vancouver, she married Edward Sutherland Crauford. He was born in 1875 at Hokitika, New Zealand. His parents were William Patrick Crauford and Louisa Emma Wild.

For some time he was a clerk with the Bank of Montreal and a real estate salesman in Victoria, British Columbia.

On February 14, 1917, in London, England, he signed his attestation papers to serve with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. He was assigned to the Canadian Forestry Corps, and later served with the Canadian Army Pay Corps. He was discharged on August 15, 1919, during the general demobilization at the end of the war.

He later worked as a clerk with the Canadian Bank of Commerce until 1938.

He did not marry.

He died in Vancouver on May 5, 1956.

“Mrs. Elizabeth Cambie, aged 83, widow of Alexander Jeffrey Cambie, former commissioner of patents at Ottawa and sister-in-law of the late Henry J. Cambie, pioneer railroad builder of Western Canada, passed away on Friday evening at her home, 1818 Robson street.

Mr. and Mrs. Cambie lived for many years in Ottawa and were well known in the East. Born in Quebec City, Mrs. Cambie was married in 1866, and moved to Ottawa, where her husband entered the government service. He was a prominent Freemason and the leading junior warden of Canada.

In 1897 Mr. Cambie died, and Mrs. Cambie and her family moved to Vancouver, where she led a retired life.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. E.F. Crawford of Sydney, Australia, and Miss Susie Cambie, and four sons, George Cambie of North Vancouver, David, Geoffrey and Jack, all of Vancouver. A seventh child, Mrs. H.Y Russell, died some years ago.” [Note: no mention of Henry, Jane, or Charles Cambie.]

Five Nordheimer family burials were originally in a mausoleum on the Glen Edyth estate. In 1923, after the City of Toronto declined to acquire the estate for a park, G. Roy Boulton Nordheimer had the estate surveyed for re-subdivision and sale. On May 18, 1923, the family remains from the mausoleum were transferred to Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
