Walter Ernest Hodges was born on July 10, 1872, in Doulting, Shepton Mallet, Somerset. His parents were John Hodges (1819-1878) and Ann Davis (1833-1908).

Walter arrived in Canada in 1897. He went briefly to the Yukon, and then he moved to the Kootenay region of British Columbia.

By 1901 he was an accountant in Greenwood, British Columbia.

In July 10, 1906, in Cranbrook, British Columbia, Walter married Margaret Isabel Keay. She was born in Goldenville, Nova Scotia, on December 25, 1876. Her parents were William George Keay and Catherine Augusta Sinclair (1848-1939).

Walter carried on his accounting business in Vancouver through the 1920s.

Margaret died in Vancouver on October 24, 1931. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.
