In 1924, while Ellis and Ross were operating an ice cream parlor at this address, practical jokers staged a fictitious murder scene on the premises.
The Vancouver Province version of the story referred to the firm as “Ellis and Brown,” which was actually the name of a Vancouver law firm: Joseph N. Ellis and William C. Brown.
In October 1928, the sheriff’s bailiff auctioned two soft drink machines at 2042 Beach Avenue.
Later in October 1928, other confectionery equipment was for sale by auction.
In 1933, Arthur James Foxall (1888-1983) operated a music studio at 2042 Beach Avenue.
Pauline Olsen Dancing Studio
In 1934, “Miss Pauline Olsen” (Pauline Margareth Olsen) had a dancing studio at 2042 Beach Avenue. (She lived next door, at number 33 in Englesea Lodge, 2046 Beach Avenue.)
Pauline was born on May 18, 1914 in Plenty, Saskatchewan. Her parents were Niels Peter Olsen and Marie Pauline Dissing.
Pauline appeared in many local productions; she also taught dancing.
On July 12, 1940, in Vancouver, Pauline married Norman William Code, who was a paint salesman. He was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on September 24, 1914. His parents were Norman William Code and Mary Hansen.
Pauline died in White Rock, British Columbia on June 6, 1974.
Norman later married Iris Caldwell. Norman died in Vancouver on March 3, 1993.
Dunc Williams Sporting Goods
In 1935, Claude U. Whitsell opened “The Gym” at 1030 Hornby Street.
Dunc Williams operated a sporting goods department in connection with “The Gym.” Dunc Williams had another store at 2042 Beach Avenue.
Later Years
In 1938, the building at 2042 Beach Avenue was for sale.
In the 1940s, the business fixtures were for sale.
In the early 1950s, the City of Vancouver was clearing the remaining houses from the south side of Beach Avenue.
In 1952, the store building was for sale, along with an interior wall case.
In 1962, this lot was part of the beach-front park area on English Bay.
