Maxwell, Herbert Bowen (1877-1936)

Herbert Bowen Maxwell was a physician who lived at 1833 Comox Street in 1916.

He was born on August 2, 1877, at Western Super Mare, Somerset, England. His father was Rev. David Ardill Maxwell, who was born in Scotland; his mother was Amy Woosnam, who was born in India.

Herbert attended Emmanuel College in Cambridge, England. He worked at London Hospital in 1900, and became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1905, and he was in practice at Woking, Surrey, from 1907 to 1911.

On April 7, 1908, Herbert married Elsie Constable Clark. She was born in Glasgow, Scotland. In 1911, Herbert and Elsie were living in Woking.

Herbert arrived in Vancouver about 1911. He had his office at 709 Dunsmuir Street. By 1916, he was on active military service.

After the war, he came back to Vancouver, where he stayed until about 1924. By 1925, he was living in Ladysmith, British Columbia, where he was a physician and city health officer. He appears to have stayed in Ladysmith until about 1931.

He seems to have gone back to England in the early part of the 1930s. He died on January 24, 1936 at Wrington, Somerset.

Herbert and Elsie had three sons:

Patrick Herbert Maxwell was born on May 19, 1910 at St. John’s, Woking, Surrey. He died in Rhodesia in 1976.

Ian David Maxwell was born on March 7, 1915, in Vancouver. He died in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on May 22, 2004.

Donald Eustace Maxwell was born on January 3, 1917, in London, England. He died in September 1978 in London.

  2. Actually, Herbert had 3 children: Patrick Herbert, Ian David, and Donald Eustace. Source: myself, son of Ian David. Pat died in Rhodesia, (date unknown at present), Ian died in Halifax, NS, Canada in 2004, and Donald died in London, England (date uncertain)

I happened upon your remarkable, and exhaustively researched entry about my grandfather, to which I apparently contributed some time ago. Since that time I have obtained a little more detail, if it is of any interest or importance. Herbert’s children, Patrick was born May 19, 1910 at St. John’s, Woking, Surrey. (So Herbert was back in England at that time) He died in Rhodesia in 1976. Ian, my father, was born March 7, 1915 in Vancouver, and died May 22, 2004 in Halifax, NS. Donald, the youngest, was born Jan 3, 1917, and I fear I do not know where. He died in September, 1978 in London, England.
