John Theodore Phelan – Vancouver Sun – October 15 1929 – page 20

John Theodore Phelan was a telegraph company superintendent. He lived at 1800 Haro Street from 1904 to 1924.

He was born on December 5, 1859 (or 1860), in Quebec City, Quebec. His father was Lawrence Phelan.

He went to high school and to a commercial academy in Quebec. After school, he first worked with the Montreal Telegraph Company, and then with the Canadian Pacific Railway for twenty years.

In Ottawa on December 24, 1888, John married Ola Ettie Mix. Her father was Joshua James Mix; her mother was Minnie Burns.

John and Ola lived in Ottawa until they came to British Columbia in the early 1900s.

In Vancouver, John belonged to the Terminal City Club, the Marine Drive Golf Club, and the A.F. & A.M. [Ancient Free & Accepted Masonry: http://freemasonry.bcy.ca/texts/afandam.html].

John died in Victoria on October 15, 1929, after becoming ill on the boat trip from Vancouver to Victoria. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Ola died in Vancouver on August 26, 1924.

Phelan, a railway point near Prince Rupert, is named after John. It appears that Phelan Lake in northern British Columbia is also named after him.

John and Ola had five children:

Harry Lawrence Phelan

Harry was born on November 5, 1889, in Ottawa, Ontario. He served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. He worked as an electrical mechanic. On September 13, 1922, in Vancouver, he married Jessie Cunningham Kelly; they were later separated, although it appears that they did not divorce. Harry died in Vancouver on September 25, 1949.

Ola Margaret Phelan

Ola was born in Ottawa, Ontario on September 28, 1891. On June 17, 1914, in Vancouer, she married William Dalton Tippens. He was born in Nashville, Tennessee, and he was a railway agent in Prince Rupert, British Columbia. On October 29, 1915, he was killed in a railway accident east of Prince Rupert.

On July 10, 1920, in Vancouver, Ola married George Ernest Scott. They were divorced in Vancouver on September 29, 1936.

Ola died in Vancouver on December 12, 1946.

Iona Lavina Phelan

Iona may also have been called Beatrice Lavina Phelan. If so, she was born in Ottawa on April 19, 1893 (although some sources give her date of birth as April 19, 1895). On January 22, 1923, in Vancouver, she married Augustus Bailey. He was born in Vancouver on July 20, 1893, and he was a druggist in Prince Rupert. Later, Augustus and Iona lived near Los Angeles, California.

Iona died in California in December 1983.

Augustus died in California in December 1984.

Malvena Marie Phelan

Malvena Marie Phelan (sometimes called “Vena”) was born in Ottawa, Ontario, on May 8, 1895. On February 16, 1920, in Vancouver, she married John William Earl Nicholls. He was a comptroller, and later became the head of a fishing company.

Malvena died in Vancouver on August 22, 1953.

John died in Vancouver on November 8, 1960.

Irene Simmons Phelan (also known as Pamela Stephen)

Irene was born on May 18, 1897, in Ottawa, Ontario. On June 9, 1920, she married Rowley Cruit. They were later divorced. Rowley Cruit died in Vancouver on July 20, 1944.

Rowley and Irene had two sons. One son, Richard Noel Cruit, was with the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. He died in action in Tunisia on November 28, 1942. Their other son, Kenneth W. Cruit was still living in 1968.

Irene married William Gordon Stephen in Vancouver on March 26, 1928. They became active in Vancouver’s literary scene.

William died in Vancouver on November 30, 1961.

Irene died in Vancouver on July 28, 1968.
