John Sutherland Johnstone was a bartender and a constable for the Canadian Pacific Railway. He lived at 1055 Denman Street in 1911.

Early Life

According to the available documents, John was born in June 1875 in Melrose, Scotland. His parents were Mark Johnstone and Jeannett Sutherland.

It is possible that this Scottish police news story from 1898 refers to the same John Sutherland Johnstone.

This Day’s Police News, Edinburgh Evening News (Edinburgh, Scotland), Saturday, February 19, 1898, page 2.

To Canada

John Sutherland Johnstone appears to have arrived in Canada in 1906.

In 1909, he was a hotel clerk in Kamloops, British Columbia.

There was also a John S. Sutherland who worked as a builder and labourer in Enderby, British Columbia. It is doubtful that this is the same person, since he died in Enderby in 1918 at the age of 73.

Marriage to Annie Dover Harris

On March 31, 1909, in Kamloops, John married Annie Dover Harris, who was a widow.

Annie (sometimes called “Hannah”) was born in Flimby, Cumberland, England, on May 24, 1876. Her parents were John Bell Dover (about 1831-1881) and Zillah (Isabella) Bethwaite (about 1835-1913).

Although it is not certain that this is the same person, a woman named Hannah Dover married James Harris in Cockermouth, Cumberland, England in the third quarter of 1894.

Hannah Harris was working as a domestic servant in Dalston, Cumberland at the time of the 1901 England and Wales census. An 11-year-old girl named Harriet Dover was a visitor in the same household as Hannah.

Hannah’s husband appears to have died sometime before 1909.

In 1906 a woman named Hannah Dover travelled from Liverpool, England to Canada. It appears that she arrived in Montreal, Quebec on June 15, 1906. (It is not certain that this is the same person who was married to Mr. Harris.)

To Vancouver

By 1911, John and Annie Johnstone were living at 1055 Denman Street in Vancouver. According to the 1911 Canada census, John was a constable for the Canadian Pacific Railway. The 1911 Vancouver directory said that he was a bartender.

The 1911 Canada census showed that John and Annie had three children:

William Johnstone, born in British Columbia in June 1907.

Mary Alice Johnstone, born in British Columbia in July 1909.

“Magaret” R. Johnstone, born in British Columbia in September 1910.

William, the oldest, was born before the marriage in 1909, so Annie’s first husband may have been William’s father.

After 1911, the Vancouver directories do not show any further signs of this family.

To Saskatoon

The Johnstones moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. They were living at 1123 Kilburn Avenue in Saskatoon in 1912 and 1913.

Disappearance

John Johnstone worked as a bookkeeper for the Saskatoon Board of Trade, but this employment ended after about two years. John disappeared, along with large amounts of money.

The Royal Northwest Mounted Police issued a wanted poster, stating that John was wanted for embezzlement, and that he had absconded from Saskatoon on August 10, 1913. The poster added that he had been a marine firemen and that he had worked with the city police in Edinburgh, Scotland, as well as with police in British Columbia. He had also been a laborer, bartender and clerk.

A series of newspaper articles described John’s disappearance and the efforts of the police to locate him.

Saskatoon Daily Star, September 17, 1913, page 3, columns 1-3.
Saskatoon Daily Star, September 24, 1913, page 3, column 4.

For a time it appeared that he had died in Winnipeg, Manitoba, but the evidence led to a deceased railway employee rather than solving the mystery of John’s disappearance.

Saskatoon Daily Star, October 2, 1913, page 1, columns 3-4.
Saskatoon Daily Star, October 4, 1913, page 2, column 3.

In January 1914, the New South Wales Police Gazette published John’s description.

New South Wales Police Gazette, January 14, 1914, page 21, column 2.

No further detailed information is available for John. In the 1920s Annie Johnstone described herself as a widow. However, some sources indicate that John lived until 1954.

Annie’s Later Years

The 1914 Saskatoon directory listed “Mrs. Annie Johnston” at 1123 Kilburn Avenue.

Henderson’s Saskatoon city directory, volume 7 (1914), page 422, http://peel.library.ualberta.ca/bibliography/3177.2.5/430.html.

In 1920 and 1925, she and her children were living in Minot, North Dakota. (Minot is about 80 kilometres south of the border with Canada.)

Comment from Jen Grissom: November 6, 2023

Hi you came up in a search because you have a picture of my grandmother. She is the youngest daughter of John Sutherland Johnstone. Needless to say, my family history has no information about her mother or father. That’s definitely my grandmother though. It certainly explains why nobody ever talked about my great-grandfather. Very interesting, and I’m glad I came upon it and that you are collecting such histories.

Thanks!

Jen Grissom
