Florence Fenton Smith lived at 1830 Morton Avenue from 1918 to 1929. She was born Florence Logan, and she was married to Wolseley Fenton Smith, who was a ship steward.

Wolseley Fenton Smith was born on June 20, 1879, in Sheffield, Yorkshire. (He was sometimes called “W. Fenton Smith” or “George Smith.”) His father was Robert Henry Smith, who was a steel merchant. Wolseley’s mother was Ellen Ford.

Wolseley went to school in Sheffield. In October 1889, when he was 10 years old, his schoolmaster became angry because Wolseley had not done his arithmetic work correctly. The schoolmaster punished him by attacking him violently with his knuckles and with a cane. Wolesley’s father went to the authorities, who charged the schoolmaster with assault. The defence was that the schoolmaster had the right to punish students, and that the punishment in this case was not excessive. After hearing the evidence, the court dismissed the case.

At the time of the 1891 England and Wales census, he was living with his father and going to school.

From 1897 to 1909 he served as a seaman on a series of British ships.
