Early Life

Robert Elliott was born on August 2, 1872 at Ahoghill, Antrim, Northern Ireland. His parents were Robert Elliott and Letitia Gregg.

Robert served with the British forces during the South African War.

Marriage to Muriel Manson

In 1905, in Knaresborough, Yorkshire, England, Robert married Dorothy Muriel Manson. She was born in England on June 5, 1879. Her parents were Andrew William Manson and Amelia Mather.

In 1910, Robert and Muriel moved to Canada. They travelled on a ship called “Victorian,” and they arrived at Quebec City in October 1910.

By 1911, Robert was at 620 Cordova Street in Vancouver. He was working as a bookkeeper.

In 1912, Robert and Muriel moved to 2052 Beach Avenue. Robert was a bookkeeper at the B.C. Clean Towel Supply Company.

By 1913, Robert was an accountant for Alliance Trust and Investment Company Ltd.

From 1914 to 1916, Robert and Muriel did not appear in the Vancouver directories. (They may have lived in Merritt, British Columbia during part or all of this time.)

In 1917, Robert was at number 18, 1201 West Georgia Street (At that time, the building was called Florence Court. After 1931, it became the Banff Apartments).

In 1918, a Robert A. Elliott appeared in the Vancouver directory at number 5, 1974 West Georgia Street, with a note that he was on “active service.” In the 1918 Henderson directory, an accountant named Robert Elliott (with no middle initial “A”) was living at number 5, 1974 West Georgia Street.  (It is not clear if this man is the same Robert Elliott who was married to Muriel Manson.)

Later Life

By 1920, Robert was a bookkeeper for Waghorn Gwynn. Robert and Muriel were living at 1390 Thurlow Street.

In 1923, Robert and Muriel moved to 1361 Nicola Street.

On September 14, 1923, Muriel died from an attack of food poisoning. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

“Deep sorrow has been caused among a wide circle of friends by the death of Mrs. Robert Elliott, which occurred . . . this morning at her home, 1347 [sic] Nicola street. Mrs. Elliott felt unwell on Wednesday evening, but was about her house on Thursday morning. During the day she was taken acutely ill.

Mrs. Elliott, whose husband is a veteran of the South African war, came of an Aberdeenshire family. Her maiden name was Muriel Manson. In 1905 she was married and thereafter she and her husband lived for some years in Johannesburg , coming to Vancouver by 1911. They also lived in Merritt [?] for a time. For some years she had been an active member of the Sir Charles Tupper Chapter I.O.D.E.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Elliott leaves one son, Andrew . .  and one daughter, Sheila . . ..

The funeral, which will be conducted by Rev. Harold King, will take place from the residence . . . on Monday, and thence to Ocean View Cemetery.”

Robert continued to appear in the Vancouver directories until 1925 (and possibly 1926: Robert A. Elliott, an accountant, was at 1428 Nelson Street in 1926; but it is not clear if this is the same person.)

In 1926, Robert’s daughter, Sheila, indicated in an immigration document that Robert’s address was at Westward Ho, Devon, England.

He later lived in Bournemouth, England.

He died on August 26, 1932, possibly in Epsom, Surrey, which is southwest of London.

Sheila Muriel Elliott

Sheila Muriel Elliott was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, on October 4, 1906.

In January 1922, Mrs. Elliott held a party in Sheila’s honour. (Sheila’s brother, Andrew, was one of the guests.)

In 1926, Sheila sailed from Southampton, England to Halifax, Nova Scotia. She was on her way to Vancouver, where she was intending to work as a hospital nurse.

In 1928, Sheila was working as a stenographer for Lions Gate Gazette. She was living at 2080 Haro Street.

By 1930, she was a clerk for the British Columbia Electric Railway. She was living at number 2, 1225 Nelson Street.

On February 6, 1932, in Vancouver, Sheila married Maurice William James Boxall, who was a publisher’s agent. He was born on January 24, 1899, in West Cowes, on the Isle of Wight. His parents were William Henry Bolton Boxall (1861-1927) and Julia Mary Robins (1862-1933). William Henry Bolton Boxall was a rector in the parish of High Hoyland, Yorkshire.

Maurice Boxall’s Earlier Life

Maurice was a captain in the Indian Army during the First World War.

In 1923, he became a flying officer in the Royal Air Force.

In 1923, in Grantham, Lincolnshire, England, William was married to Margaret Mary Hayward. This marriage ended in divorce in October 1927.

Sheila and Maurice: Later Life

After Sheila and Maurice were married in Vancouver, they went to China, where Maurice worked in Shanghai, perhaps with the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank.

By 1939, William was a patient in the City of Plymouth Sanatorium at Totnes, Devon, England

William died in Totnes on June 14, 1940.

In April 1941, Sheila was in Vancouver to attend the wedding of her brother, Andrew.

Sheila died in Vancouver on March 10, 1945. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Andrew William Manson Elliott

Andrew William Manson Elliott was born in England on December 27, 1908.

In 1927, Andrew was a clerk with Waghorn Gwynn, and he was living at 705 Broughton Street.

In 1928, he was a bookkeeper for Lennard Poisson and Waghorn. He was living at 1100 Barclay Street.

He worked as an accountant throughout the 1930s and 1940s.

On April 10, 1941, in Vancouver, he married Louise Dorothy McDonald, who also worked as an accountant. She was born in Vancouver on July 21, 1906. Her parents were William Stewart McDonald (1864-1928); and Louise Elizabeth Helen Buttle (1871–1960).

Andrew later became a director and treasurer for International Paint.
