Morgan, George (1896-1982)

George Morgan was an accountant with Storey and Campbell Limited. He lived at the rear of 2043 Pendrell Street in 1920. (He was sometimes called “George Brown Morgan” or “George Browne Morgan.”)

Storey and Campbell Limited was a harness, saddlery and trunk dealer. Jonathan Storey and Roderick Campbell (junior) (1869-1919) were the operators of the company. Roderick Campbell (junior) lived at 2015 Haro Street from 1906 to 1919.

George Morgan was born in Scotland on August 23, 1895. His father was John Brown Morgan (1864-1940), who was a grocer. George’s mother was Mary Jane (or Jean) Murray (1862-1954).

 

George Morgan’s Parents

George’s and his parents immigrated to Canada in 1910, along with George’s brother John and John’s wife, Christine (Chrissie). According to the immigration records, the family was heading for Winnipeg, Manitoba, although they did not appear in the Winnipeg directories from 1911 to 1915.

By 1918, John Morgan (senior) had moved to Vancouver, where he was operating a grocery store.

He continued to live in Vancouver through the 1920s and 1930s. He died in Vancouver in 1940. His wife, Mary Jane, died in Vancouver in 1954.

 

George Morgan and Florence McKay Hamilton

On January 30, 1914, in New Westminster, British Columbia, George married Florence McKay Hamilton, who was a dress maker. She was born in Lesmahagow, Lanark, Scotland, on March 4, 1893. Her father was Frank Hamilton, who was a miner. Florence’s mother was Jane McKay.

George appeared in the New Westminster directory in 1914.

For a short time George was a bookkeeper for Annandale Supply Company, a grocery store in New Westminster. Thomas Annandale had owned the business until he sold it in 1911.

In 1916 and 1917, George was an accountant with the Great West Saddlery Company in Calgary. It appears that George and Flora were living with George’s parents.

By 1920, George Morgan again appeared in the Vancouver directories. He was living at the rear of 2043 Pendrell Street, and he was working as the credit manager for Storey and Campbell.

George, Flora, and their children lived at the following addresses in Vancouver

About 1924, George and Flora moved their family to the United States. The information on their son, Robert, suggests that they may have gone to Long Beach, California.

In 1930, they were living in Portland, Oregon, where George was an auditor with an accounting firm. For a time in the 1930s they were in Santa Barbara, California.

In 1940, George and Flora were living in Bexar, Texas. George was working as an accountant.

In 1942, George registered with the United States military draft system.

In 1951, George and Flora declared their intention to become naturalized United States citizens.

In 1957, they filed their petitions to become naturalized citizens. They were living at 5222 Barlin Avenue in Lakewood, California.

Flora died in Los Angeles, California, on January 1, 1961. She was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Cypress, Orange County, California.

It appears that George died in California on August 17, 1982.

 

George and Flora had the following children.

 

Lily (Lillie) May (Mae) Morgan

Lily (Lillie) May (Mae) Morgan was born in Calgary, Alberta, on July 22, 1916.

She was living with her family in Vancouver in 1921 and in Portland, Oregon, in 1930.

She was in Los Angeles in 1951.

In 1957, she was in Northridge, California.

In 1961, she was married to Edward S. Atkins.

 

George Morgan (junior)

George Morgan (junior) was born in Vancouver on March 21, 1918.

He was living with his family in Vancouver in 1921 and in Portland, Oregon, in 1930.

He enlisted with the United States military forces in 1945.

He was living in Long Beach, California in 1951.

In 1957, he was in Garden Grove, California.

 

Robert Hamilton Morgan

Robert Hamilton Morgan was born in Vancouver on November 15, 1919.

He was living with his family in Vancouver in 1921 and in Portland, Oregon, in 1930.

He went to live in Long Beach, California, in 1925. He served with the United States military during the Second World War.

In 1943, Robert became a naturalized United States citizen.

In May 1944, he joined the Long Beach Police Department.

Robert was married to Monterey Sutton. Robert and Monterey had a son, Robert Glenn Morgan, and a daughter, Sharon Morgan.

On October 30, 1950, Robert was in an on-duty traffic accident. The other driver did not give a proper signal while making a turn, and did not yield the right of way.

Robert died on November 2, 1950. After a large police procession, he was buried at Sunnyside Memorial Park in Long Beach.

In 2010, Robert’s niece gave the Long Beach Police Historical Society an album of photographs and newspaper articles relating to Robert.

 

Kenneth David Morgan

Kenneth David Morgan was born in Los Angeles County, California, on May 11, 1925.

In 1930 he was living with his parents in Portland, Oregon.

In 1940 he was living with his parents in Bexar, Texas.

In 1946 he was living in Los Angeles, California.

On May 13, 1946, in Santa Ana, California, Kenneth married Patricia Ellen Biggar. She was born in Los Angeles on May 13, 1926. Her father was Harry Arthur Biggar. Her mother was Ollie M. Kuhn. It appears that this marriage ended before 1967 and that Patricia died in 2002.

In 1951, Kenneth was living in Long Beach, California.

In 1957, he was in Healdsburg, California.

Kenneth married Madelyn A. Geib (Schneider) in Los Angeles, on December 23, 1966.

Kenneth died in Orange County, California, on December 11, 1976. It appears that he was buried in Victor Valley Memorial Park in Victorville, San Bernardino, California.
