William Augustus Roberts was an automobile salesman. He lived at 1890 Georgia Street in 1913.

William Augustus Roberts was born in Liverpool, England on August 16, 1871. His parents were Henry Charles Roberts and Jemima Brennan.

By 1906, William was living in St. Catharines, Ontario, and working as a machinist.

On August 15, 1906, in St. Catharines, William married Edna Melissa Elizabeth Mason. She was born on December 6, 1884, in Crown Hill, Vespra Township, Simcoe County, Ontario. Her parents were Joseph Mason (1862-1951) and Melissa Peacock (1862-1941).

William first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1910. He was living at 2024 East Fourth Avenue and working as a salesman for Vancouver Auto and Cycle Company.

He was an automobile salesman for most of his time in Vancouver.

During the First World War, he tried to enlist with the Canadian military forces, but he was rejected because he was too old.

He continued as a salesman through the 1920s and 1930s. He retired in the late 1930s.

At the beginning of the Second World War, he took a job operating a lathe at Burrard Drydock Company Limited in North Vancouver.

William died in Vancouver on February 26, 1946.

Edna died in Vancouver on October 4, 1967. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

William and Edna had the following children.

 

Edna Isabel Roberts

Edna Isabel Roberts was born on May 18, 1907.

In 1928 she was living with her parents at 399 West Marine Drive. She was a clerk at Spencer’s department store.

In 1930, in New Zealand, Edna married Clarence Henry Thornton, a pharmacist who was born in New Zealand on June 11, 1906.

Melissa Ella Ethelwyn Roberts

Melissa Ella Ethelwyn Roberts was born in Vancouver in January 1909.

On November 6, 1929, in Vancouver, she married Clifford Edwin Robertson, who was a grain inspector. He was born on February 22, 1896 in Minneapolis, Minnesota (although some sources say Fort William, Ontario). His parents were James Fraser Robertson and Catherine Lillian Jones. (Clifford had been married before, to Margaret Laura Irwin. That marriage took place on August 14, 1923, in Victoria, British Columba. Margaret’s parents were James William Irwin and Mary Ramsey. The marriage ended in divorce.)

Clifford died in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on January 30, 1986. Melissa died sometime after that.

 

William Joseph Roberts

William Joseph Roberts was born in Vancouver in April 1910.

He served with the Canadian army during the Second World War.

He was living in Vancouver in 1946.

 

Vera Elizabeth Roberts

Vera Elizabeth Roberts was born in Vancouver on May 18, 1912.

In 1946 she was living at home with her parents.

Sometime after 1966, Vera married Willliam Clifford Dubroy. He was born on December 1, 1902, in Sudbury, Ontario. His parents were Edward Dubroy and Mary Ann NcNeilly. (William had been married before. His first marriage was to Laura Laurenza Potvin, on December 5, 1926. The wedding was in MacFarlane Lake, near Sudbury, Ontario. This marriage ended in divorce on June 16, 1967.)

William died in Vancouver on August 29, 1981.

Vera died on August 8, 1982 in Vancouver.

 

Allen Brydon Roberts

Allen Brydon Roberts was born in Vancouver on March 10, 1915.

In 1937 he was a taxi driver.

He also worked as a fisherman, including a period at Minstrel Island, British Columbia, in the 1940s.

On October 7, 1937, in Vancouver, he married Florence Jessie Dalrymple. She was born in New Westminster, British Columbia, about 1920. Her parents were Gilbert Dalrymple and Flossie Maud Lane.

Allen died in Saanichton, British Columbia, on October 9, 1993.

 

Ernest Roy Roberts

Roy was a flight sergeant who served for six years in the RCAF.

He was living in Victoria, British Columbia in 1946.

The 1946 Victoria directory listed an Ernest Roberts, who was a kitchen assistant at Spencer’s department store. He was living at 1118 Yates Street in Victoria.

 

Milton Edward Roberts

Milton Edward Roberts was born in Vancouver on September 30, 1927.

He worked as a log salvage operator.

He married Dorothy Dearden.

Milton died in West Vancouver on June 27, 1964. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

“City Man Dies at 74, His War Task Finished,” Vancouver Province, February 27, 1946, page 9:

“William Augustus Roberts, 74, who was too old to fight in one war but insisted on getting into the next one as a shipbuilder, died Tuesday after a short illness at his home, 299 Southwest Marine drive.

A Vancouver resident since 1906, Mr. Roberts was an automobile salesman for many years. He tried to enlist in the First Great War, but was rejected because he was already in his mid-forties.

When the second war came along, Mr. Roberts had been retired for several years, but told his family he wanted to do something to speed the victory. He was already 70, but he got a job operating a lathe at the Burrard Drydock Co. Ltd. in North Vancouver, and worked hard at it until the war was over.

His widow is the former Edna Mason of St. Catharines, Ont. They were married in Ontario in 1906.

Surviving are four sons—William and Milton at home, Allen at Minstrel Island and Roy in Victoria, and three daughters, Mrs. C.E. Robertson and Miss Vera Roberts in Vancouver and Mrs. C.H. Thornton in New Zealand. Roy was a flight sergeant who served for six years in the RCAF, and William was in the army.

Funeral rites will be conducted by Rev. H.R. McGill at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Mt. Pleasant Undertaking Co. Ltd., 306 East Eleventh.”
