Lawson, William Alexander (1872-1930)

William Alexander Lawson was the manager of the Vancouver Insurance and Vessel Agency. He lived at 1945 Haro Street from 1916 to 1930. His wife, Teresa, lived at 1945 Haro Street from 1931 to 1936.

William Alexander Lawson was born in Victoria, British Columbia, on June 9, 1872. His father was James Hill Lawson (1840-1915), who worked for many years with the Hudson’s Bay Company. He was later the vice president of R.P. Rithet and Company, a prominent Victoria business. William’s mother was Ann Jennet MacDonald (1848-1934).

In 1881 William was living with his family in Victoria. In 1891 he was with his family in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where his father was the land commissioner for about two years.

By the late 1890s the Lawsons had returned to Victoria. William was working with R.P. Rithet and Company.

On April 18, 1900, in Victoria, William married Teresa (or Theresa) O’Sullivan, who was born in Victoria on September 2, 1872. Her parents were Humphrey O’Sullivan (1833-1893) and Elizabeth O’Brien (1846-1931).

William and Teresa remained in Victoria until about 1910.

William first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1911. He was the manager of Vancouver Insurance and Vessel Agency, and he was living at 985 Cardero Street.

William and Teresa lived at the following addresses in Vancouver.

In 1914 they appeared in the Vancouver society directory.

About 1916 they moved to 1945 Haro Street, where they lived until William died on October 23, 1930. He was buried in Ross Bay Cemetery in Victoria.

Teresa died in Vancouver on October 15, 1951. She was buried in Ross Bay Cemetery in Victoria.

William and Teresa had the following children.

 

Kenneth James Lawson

Kenneth James Lawson was born in Victoria on May 7, 1901.

In 1911 and 1921 he was living with his parents in Vancouver.

In 1930 he was in San Francisco, California, working as a marine insurance underwriter.

He later worked as a welder.

He never married.

He died in Vancouver on December 18, 1953. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

 

Dorothy Mary Lawson

Dorothy Mary Lawson was born in Victoria, British Columbia, on September 25, 1902.

In 1911, 1921 and 1930 she was living with her parents in Vancouver.

For a time she worked as a clerk with the Canadian National Railway.

She never married.

She died in Vancouver on January 28, 1990.

 

Harold William Lawson

Harold William Lawson was born in Victoria, British Columbia, on April 11, 1907.

In 1911, 1921 and 1930 he was living with his parents in Vancouver.

In the 1930s he was a teller with the Imperial Bank of Canada.

On October 1, 1936, in Vancouver, he married Kathleen McKay Ross. She was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on February 24, 1910. Her parents were Andrew Allan Ross and Sara Maud Balfour.

Harold later became an executive with the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce.

Harold died in Vancouver on April 18, 1965.

Kathleen died in Vancouver on February 2, 1988.

 

Margaret Alexandria Lawson

Margaret Alexandria Lawson was born in Vancouver on June 22, 1914.

On August 24, 1940, in Vancouver, she married Robert (“Bob”) Reid Cronberry Howatson, who was a circulation manager for the Vancouver Province newspaper. He was born in Edmonton, Alberta about 1910. His parents were William Reid Cronberry Howatson (1885-1951) and Katherine Rupprecht (1884-1964).

Bob was a veteran of the Second World War.

He continued to work for the Vancouver Province for a total of 50 years.

Bob died on September 21, 2002.

Margaret died on August 19, 2007.

“A well-known native son of British Columbia died Thursday in the person of Mr. William Alexander Lawson, a marine insurance broker of Vancouver, after a few days’ illness of pneumonia. He was born in Victoria in June, 1872, and his aged mother, Mrs. J.H. Lawson sr., who came to this province in the sixties, still lives there.

The late Mr. Lawson, who resided at 1945 Haro street, is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters. The oldest son is Kenneth, living in San Francisco; the second Harold, with the Imperial Bank in Vancouver, and the daughters are Miss Dorothy and Miss Margaret Lawson. Mr. J.H. Lawson, Vancouver barrister, was a brother of the deceased. Three other brothers survive—H.H. and J.M. in Victoria, and V.M. in Powell River. Two sisters, Mrs. Louis Davies and Mrs. Oswald Parker, live in Victoria.

The funeral will be held Saturday at Victoria, where services will take place in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church at 3 o’clock and interment in Ross Bay Cemetery. The remains are resting at Center & Hanna’s parlors here.”

Mrs. Lawson was born in Victoria 80 years ago, daughter of Humphrey O’Sullivan, who ran the Hudson’s Bay trading post in the colony at that time.

She came to Vancouver with her late husband in 1910.

Surviving are two daughters, Dorothy, Vancouver, and Mrs. R. Howatson, North Vancouver; two sons, Kenneth and Harold, both of Vancouver, and two sisters, Elizabeth and Anne O’Sullivan, Victoria.

Burial will be in Victoria.”
