McLachlan, Dugald James (1864-1931)

Dugald James McLachlan was a hardware merchant. He lived at 1059 Chilco Street from 1909 to 1919.

Dugald James McLachlan was born on August 1, 1864, in Renfrew County, Ontario. His father was Dugald James McLachlan. His mother was Annie Sellars.

From 1871 to 1891 he lived with his parents in the township of Horton in Renfrew County.

 

Move to British Columbia

In the 1890s Dugald moved to British Columbia.

On December 11, 1895, in Vancouver, he married Mary Ellen Allen. She was born in Madoc, Ontario, on June 30, 1872. Her father was Thomas Allen (1841-1908), who was a contractor. Mary’s mother was Martha Bradshaw (1844-1906).

Dugald and Mary lived in the lower mainland of British Columbia for almost all of their married life.

In the 1898 British Columbia directory, Dugald appeared at 325 Princess Street; his brother, Donald, was also at the same address. Both Dugald and Donald were working at 144 Cordova Street: Walter Boult had a music store at 144 Cordova Street and a cigar store at 142 Cordova.

By the next year, Dugald and Donald were both working for the Vancouver Hardware Company. They were living at 1013 Howe Street.

Brief Time in Nelson, British Columbia

From 1900 to 1903, Dugald and Mary lived in Nelson, British Columbia, along with Donald.

Dugald and Donald operated a hardware store under their own name.

Return to Vancouver

Dugald and Mary returned to Vancouver about 1904. They lived at the following addresses.

Dugald continued his association with the hardware business. For a time he was the Vancouver manager of Beach Foundry Limited, which was an Ottawa-based stove manufacturing company.

Mary’s Public Welfare Work

Mary was active in several areas of public welfare work, including orphanages, the development of playgrounds, the Provincial Council of British Columbia and the Provincial Council of Women of British Columbia. She was also active in the John Howard Society. She belonged to the Women’s Canadian Club of Vancouver, and the Rosemary Club, which was an organization of pioneer women. She was a charter member of the Point Grey Golf and Country Club.

 

Later Years

Dugald and Mary lived in Vancouver through the 1920s.

Dugald died in Vancouver on June 6, 1931. He was buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Mary died in Vancouver on April 10, 1941. She was buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Burnaby.

 

Dugald and Mary had a son.

 

Dugald James Allen McLachlan

Dugald James Allen McLachlan was born in Vancouver on November 4, 1907.

He worked as a bookkeeper and salesman, and later as a customs officer for Canada Customs.

On May 19, 1930, in Vancouver, he married Alpha Linnea Torhjelm, who worked as a domestic. She was born on July 24, 1908, in Meeting Creek, Saskatchewan (or in Edensville, Alberta). Her father was Israel Torhjelm. Her mother was Helena Nelson. This marriage ended in divorce. On February 21, 1931, in Vancouver, Alpha married Walter Thomas White, who was a salesman. He was born in London, England, on October 29, 1894. His mother was Edith Maria Radley. His father may have been Harry Newell. Walter died in Vancouver on March 8, 1968.

Dugald’s second marriage was to Audrey Mcgregor. This marriage ended in divorce.

Dugald died in Vancouver on April 6, 1979.

“Many Vancouver organizations mourn an active and popular leader in the death during the Easter holidays of Mrs. D.J. McLachlan, 975 Chilco street. A resident of British Columbia for all but three of her 70 years, she had been prominent in social service in this city for nearly forty of them.

Mrs. McLachlan suffered a stroke early in March. After a month in hospital she was believed to be recovering and was taken home. She died in her sleep on Thursday.

Daughter of Thomas Allen, a pioneer Royal City contractor, Mrs. Mary Ellen McLachlan came to New Westminster from her native Maydock [sic], Ont., in 1875. Except for a few years at Nelson, she had lived on the lower mainland all her life. In 1904 Mr. and Mrs. McLachlan settled in Vancouver, where Mr. McLachlan entered the hardware business. He died in 1931.

Mrs. McLachlan was a worker for many years in both the local and provincial council of women, of which she was a past president. Active in the John Howard Society, she was its first vice-president at the time of her death. She was also a former officer and life member of the women’s Canadian Club, a director of the Alexandra Orphanage and charter member of the Point Grey Golf Club. Her associations also extended to many other bodies, including the Rosemary Club, an organization of pioneer women.

For some nine years she had been on the staff of the provincial social service department.

Mrs. McLachlan is survived by a son Pte. J. Allen McLachlan, R.C.A.S.C., C.A.S.F. The funeral will be held from the Mount Pleasant Undertaking Parlors at 3 p.m. Wednesday.”
