Clark, Henry Charles (1875-1952)

Henry Charles Clark was an accountant. He lived at 1901 Beach Avenue from 1908 to 1915.

Henry was born in York, England, on February 22, 1875.

His father was Major James Alston Clark (1832-1913).

Henry’s mother was Harriet Christina Montagu Dick-Cunyngham (about 1841-1923), who was the daughter of Sir William Hanmer Dick-Cunyngham and Susan Alston-Stewart. (In 1916, Henry’s mother, then called Mrs. Alston Clark, was living at 16 Lansdown Road, Wimbledon, London, SW, England.)

Henry arrived in Canada about 1899. On January 14, 1905, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he married Mabel Livingston. She was born in Wisconsin on May 18, 1874. Mabel’s father was Alexander Livingston (1837-1926), who was a civil engineer and contractor. Her mother was Annie Hayes (1849-1936).

By 1908, Henry and Mabel were living in Vancouver. Henry was working as an accountant for Mainland Transfer Company Ltd., which had been at the corner of Pender Street and Abbott Street since about 1906.

Mainland Transfer Company Ltd. was incorporated on May 28, 1902, with a capital stock of $50,000, in $100 shares. Frank David Gross (1865-1951) was the manager of the company. Willie Dalton (1886-1946) was the company secretary.

On August 2, 1916, Henry signed his attestation papers with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He stated that Mabel’s address was in care of Mrs. Edgar Lee, Matthews Avenue, Vancouver. Lillian Bessie Adams (1875-1953) was married to Edgar Stanley Lee (1872-1942), and they lived at 1190 Matthews Avenue. Edgar was a managing director of the mortgage brokering firm of Griffith and Lee, along with Julius Henry Griffith (1866-1938).

For part of the time during the war, Mabel was living at 1056 Foul Bay Road in Victoria, British Columbia.

Henry served in Europe with the Third Canadian Divisional Ammunition Company from January 17, 1917, to February 24, 1919. He was demobilized in Victoria, British Columbia, on April 2, 1919.

By 1921, Henry and Mabel were back in Vancouver, and were living in Oakhurst Apartments at 2833 Oak Street. Henry was an accountant with Mainland Transfer. He continued to work with Mainland Transfer through much of the 1920s.

By 1930, Henry and Mabel were living at 3506 West 39th Avenue, along with Mabel’s mother. Henry was working as a bookkeeper with the law firm of Walsh Bull Housser. [Walter William Walsh (1875-1947) lived at 1844 Barclay Street in 1910 and 1911.]

Henry died in Vancouver on Mary 29, 1952. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.
