Haviland, John Archibald (1878-1936)

John Archibald Haviland was a lawyer who lived at 1851 Comox Street from 1918 to 1928.

He was born in Chatham, New Brunswick, on January 29, 1878. His father was John Haviland (1833-1897); his mother was Jane Archibald (born about 1849 in New Brunswick).

He graduated from the Faculty of Law at Dalhousie University about 1905. He arrived in Vancouver about 1912, and set up a law office in the Dominion Trust Building. He was living at 1165 Haro Street.

By 1913, he was living at 1650 Haro Street. He was in a law partnership with Edwin Byron Ross (1879-1976), a lawyer who was also from New Brunswick; they had an office in the Rogers Building.

In 1914, he was a law partner with Henry Curtis Shaw (1863-1931) and Vernon Hastings Shaw (1879-1946), who had offices in the Metropolitan Building. He was living at Number 17 in the Victoria Court apartments at 859 Thurlow Street.

By 1918, John was in practice in his own law firm. He lived at 1851 Comox Street from 1918 until 1928, after which he moved to 5375 Angus Drive in Vancouver. He continued to practice law until about 1934.

He died in Vancouver on December 13, 1936; he was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Alice died on October 17, 1970. She was buried in St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Bushville, New Brunswick.

It appears that John and Alice did not have surviving children.

John’s sister, Ida Isabel Haviland, was a school teacher in Vancouver. She was born on October 12, 1865, in New Brunswick. She never married, and she died in New Westminster on January 24, 1942.
