Harry’s mother was Henrietta Eliza Owen, who was born in 1852 and died in 1884.

On November 24, 1884, John Sayer married Harriett Burin in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire

John died on July 25, 1886.

Harry’s Early Life and Arrival in Vancouver

In 1881, Harry was living with his parents in Birmingham.

In 1900 he married Maude Agnes Brett. It appears that she was born in England on February 14, 1877 (although some sources say she was born in Ireland). Her father was Thomas Brett.

In 1901, Harry and Maude were living in Northfield, Worcestershire. Harry was working as a commercial clerk.

In 1906 Harry was in Edgbaston, Warwickshire.

Harry first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1911. He was living at 1450 Lakewood Drive and working as a salesman for Modern Office Supply Company Limited.

Harry had a long series of sales positions with a variety of companies, both in Vancouver and on Vancouver Island. For a time in the early 1920s he and his family also lived on the island.

In 1912, Harry was a director of ABC Motor Company at 929 Main Street.

In 1913 and 1914, he was the managing director of Harry R. Sayer Limited, which sold a wide range of tires and other rubber products.

In 1915 he was a salesman with Tait Tire Company.

In 1916, Harry was in the rubber goods business, along with Robert Bertram Ford (1883-1916), who also lived at 2060 Comox Street in 1915 and 1916. In 1917 Harry had his own tire sales business at 805 Pender Street.

The 1918 directory did not list an occupation for Harry. His wife, Maude, was a clerk with Julius A. Teepoorten’s wholesale drug business.

In 1919 Harry was an analyst with Victoria Whaling Company Limited.

In 1920 he was living at 290 Government Street in Victoria. He was working as an analyst for Consolidated Whaling Corporation. (It appears that the other members of the Sayer family also moved to Victoria about this time.)

In 1921, Harry was at 648 Dallas Road in Victoria. He was selling fertilizers and fish oils. His daughter, Mollie was a stenographer at the Royal Bank of Canada.

In 1921 Harry advertised his products in the Victoria Daily Colonist.

In 1922 he was a salesman for the Victoria Chemical Company.

By 1923 he was back in Vancouver, still working as a salesman for Victoria Chemical.

In 1925 he started a fruit and vegetable brokerage business called Sayer and Company.

In 1931 the company became Sayer and Son.

Harry and Maude continued to live in Vancouver through the 1930s and into the 1940s.

Harry died in Vancouver on July 6, 1946. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Maude died in Vancouver on January 8, 1949. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.

Harry and Maude had the following children.

 

Mary Evelyn (“Mollie”) Sayer

Mary Evelyn (“Mollie”) Sayer was born on March 20, 1902, in Kings Norton, Worcestershire, England.

In 1910 she travelled to Canada with her mother.

While the Sayer family was in Victoria, Mollie was a stenographer with the Royal Bank of Canada. After the family moved back to Vancouver, Mollie found a position as a stenographer with the Royal Bank in Vancouver.

On May 1, 1926, in Vancouver, Mollie married William Edgerton Willins, who was a salesman. He was born in Morpeth, Northumberland, England on August 28, 1900. His parents were William Hetherington Willins (1873-1967) and Louisa Mary Blake (1872-1948).

After the wedding, William and Mollie took the train to San Francisco, California, where they were planning to live.

By 1929, William was in the Vancouver directories. He was a trader for the brokerage firm of Solloway Mills and Company Limited.

William worked as a bookkeeper until he retired about 1960. He died in Vancouver on September 5, 1970. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Mollie died in Vancouver on November 9, 1985. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

 

Arthur John Sayer

Arthur John Sayer was born in Kings Norton, Worcestershire, England, on May 24, 1906.

He travelled to Canada with his mother in 1910.

In 1911 he was living with his parents in Vancouver.

In 1921 he was with his parents on Vancouver Island.

For a time he worked in his father’s business, Sayer and Son. He later became an oil worker at the Shell refinery.

He did not marry.

He died in Vancouver on October 9, 1958. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.
