Deaths, Vancouver Sun, (02/16/02); [CAN-BC-OBITS] FEb 16, 2002 Lower Mainland / Vancouver; http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/CAN-BC-OBITS/2002-02/1013886467: “Gould—the Honourable John (Jay) on February 5 in his 90 year, following a brief illness while vacationing in Palm Desert, California. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Pat; son Bill; daughters Beth (Hall), Jayna (Ellsworth); grandchildren Carly, Evan, Jay, Alec, Kayla. As sentiment was anathma to Jay, he extracted a promise from his family that the word “loving” would be stricken from the text of any obituary over which we had control. A lifetime Vancouver resident, he enrolled at UBC at age 16 where he excelled in bridge. At age 17 he renounced higher education, left university to work in Powell River’s pulp and paper mills and sundry other occupations. Five years later Jay returned gratefully to UBC, and was voted Student Council President in 1936. In due course a law degree, on his way to a distinguished career. During World War II he served aboard corvettes in the North Atlantic theatre, with the rank of Lt. Commander. Always fascinated by politics, on his return to civilian life after the war, Jay served as a Liberal MLA from 1949 to 1952. He reluctantly retired, due, he said, to “a massive assist from the voting public.” An avid boater, Jay acquired several vessels over the years, each a challenge – until the last one – the greatest challenge of them all, by which time he should have known better. He was appointed to the Supreme Court of British Columbia in 1964. It is safe to say that his innate kindness and sense of fair play did not go unnoticed nor unheralded. Upon mandatory retirement at 75 Jay was able to devote more time to his passion for travel. The London theatre was the greatest attraction, a month-long annual trek which he missed only once in 24 years. At home in his well-equipped workshop he applied his unquestionable skills to designing and making dreadful lamps and recycling his vast inventory of collected junk. Jay was a man of constant contradictions. He was funny, exasperating, opinionated, kind, arrogant, warm and utterly unique. He will be sorely missed. At his request there will be no service. His family will welcome his friends at 640 Duchess Avenue, West Vancouver, on Saturday Feb 23, from 4-6 p.m.”
