Family Background

Henry Seath was born near Folkestone, Kent on May 20, 1869. His father was George Seath (1835-1926). Henry’s mother was Elizabeth Ashcroft Heritage (1834-1906).

In 1871 Henry was living with his parents.

In 1881 he was a student at Grove End house in Folkestone.

In 1891 he was living with his brother, Marsh Seath, and he was working as a farmer.

Marriage to Nellie Aird

On November 23, 1896, in Hampstead, London, Henry married Nellie Harriett Aird, who was born on January 1, 1873. Her parents were William Aird (1842-1915) and Harriett Killick Paget (1851-1895). (In some references, she is called Elizabeth Padgett.)

William Aird was a farmer. From 1876 to 1915, he was the innkeeper at the Valiant Sailor Inn near Folkestone.

Henry worked as a realtor and dry goods merchant.

First World War

On February 24, 1916, in Victoria, British Columbia, Henry signed his attestation paper to serve with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. His occupation was “rancher.” (He gave the year of his birth as 1877, rather than 1869.) In 1917 and 1918 he was on active service.

In 1917, an advertisement to rent 1084 Denman Street appeared in the Vancouver World. Since Henry was with the military then, Nellie probably placed the advertisement.

Henry was able to do only light duties during the war. On February 7, 1919, he was discharged during the general demobilization. (A medal with his name and regimental number was sold on eBay on February 27, 2014.)

It appears that Nellie did not live with Henry for much of their married life in the early 1920s and late 1930s. The directories indicated that she was in Vancouver during those years.

Nellie died in Vancouver on January 6, 1944. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Henry continued to live in the Okanagan until the late 1940s.

In early 1951 he went to live at the Home for the Aged in Vernon, British Columbia. (The provincial government built this facility in 1948. It later became Dellview Hospital until it closed in 1981. Vernon Jubilee Hospital built the Polson Extended Care Unit on the site in 1982.)

In 1921, Grace was living with her mother in Vancouver. She was operating a florist business at 1080 Denman Street.

On November 24, 1923, she again travelled to San Francisco to visit John Montgomery.

It appears that Grace and John were married sometime between 1923 and 1925.

In 1930 and 1940, John and Grace were in Los Angeles, California. John was a sound technician in a movie studio.

Grace worked as a nurse.

John died in California in October 1963.

Grace died on April 15, 1966 in Fallon, Nevada. She was buried in Churchill County Cemetery in Fallon.

Robert Eagleton Montgomery

Robert Eagleton Montgomery was born in San Francisco on February 18, 1925.

On June 25, 1944, in Los Angeles, Robert married Joy Irene Leake (sometimes called “Irene Joy”) . She was born on April 11, 1927, in Warrensburg, Missouri, southeast of Kansas City. Her parents were Wilkie W. Leake (1898-1976) and Bessie Burton (1904-1963).

Irene died in Fallon, Nevada, on April 25, 1987. She was buried in Churchill County Cemetery in Fallon.

Robert died in Fallon on July 24, 1990. He was buried in Churchill County Cemetery in Fallon.

Robert and Irene had a son named James Montgomery.

Irene Elizabeth Paget Seath

Irene Elizabeth Paget Seath was born in Vancouver on June 30, 1909.

She never married.

In 1927 she was planning to visit her sister, Grace, who was living at 688 Cleary Street in San Francisco, California. (Irene did not have an immigration visa, so was not able to enter the United States. She may have completed her trip later.)

In 1938, a newspaper advertisement asked “Miss Irene Seath” to contact a post office box in Santa Cruz, California. (It is not certain that this is the Irene Seath from Vancouver. If it was the same person, she had been a guest of Pine Lodge in 1928. Pine Lodge was a resort in the hills north of Santa Cruz. The Crandall family operated the resort from the early 1900s until the 1940s. )

Lake Country, British Columbia; https://www.lakecountry.bc.ca/en/living-in-our-community/neighbourhoods.aspx:

The District of Lake Country was incorporated in 1995. It is made up of four neighbourhoods, or wards, which have their own rich histories and cultural life.

The area was populated by the Okanagan First Nations for centuries before settlers arrived in the late 1800s. We believe the first contact with these people was in 1700 by the Hudson’s Bay Company. Carr’s Landing, Okanagan Centre, Oyama and Winfield were settled between 1890 and1906 due to the growing agricultural industries.

Carr’s Landing

The Interior Salish were the first residents of the area and called Carr’s Landing Cus-in-so-nook, meaning Place of Fickle Women. The early pioneers called it Sunnywold.

Andrew Carr and his wife Agnes built their home, with the Carr’s Landing wharf built below it, just north of where Jealous Fruits is today. Settlers such as the Carrs, Thorlaksons and Gibsons farmed close to the lake and ranchers like Joseph Cools ran cattle into the Charolais area.

The small Sunnywold School opened off Commonage Road and became the centre of the new community. For decades, while Vernon, Kelowna, and Winfield grew rapidly, Carr’s Landing remained a quiet, rural, farming community.

Coral Beach was one of the first areas to be subdivided in the early 1960’s, and much development has occurred since then.
