Archie Barnes Martin was the managing director of Pacific Mills Limited. He lived at 1963 Comox Street in 1918 and 1919.

Archie Barnes Martin was born on February 27, 1872, in Tripoli, Iowa. (Sometimes his first name also appears as “Archer” or “Archibald.”)

Archie’s father was Thomas Wallace Martin (1844–1903), who was a lumber yard superintendent. Archie’s mother was Sarah Elizabeth Barnes (1851-1909), who was a teacher and newspaper editor.

In 1900 the Martin family was living in Fairhaven City, south of downtown Bellingham, Washington.

 

Marriage to Sadie and Business in Washington State

On October 15, 1902, in Fairhaven, Archie married Sarah Jane (“Sadie”) Templin. She was born in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, on July 26, 1876. Her parents were Isaac Clinton Templin (1842-1901) and Emma Elizabeth Carrier (1851-1904).

Archie’s father, Thomas, died on May 8, 1903. He was buried in Bayview Cemetery in Bellingham, Washington.

In 1908, Archie was the secretary of Puget Sound Mills and Timber Company.

In 1909, Archie’s mother, Sadie, died in Stockton, California.

Life in Vancouver

Archie first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1910. He and William M. Gilfoy had a timber business in Vancouver. Archie was living in the Majestic Apartments, at the corner of Broughton Street and Georgia Street.

In October 1919, Archie and Sadie moved from the Comox Street house to 3989 Granville Street in Shaughnessy Heights.

In 1922, Archie moved to San Francisco (although he still appeared in the Vancouver directories until 1924).

Marriage to Violet Yale Smith

In 1927, Archie married Violet Yale Smith (née Mallory), who was recently divorced.

Violet was born in Toronto, Ontario, on November 22, 1894. Her father was John Wesley Mallory (1858-1904), who was an architect. Violet’s mother was Laura Louise Pretty (1859-1945).

On October 5, 1916, in Vancouver, Violet married Elizur (“Eli”) Yale Smith, a soldier who had been a clerk in the chambers of the British Columbia Supreme Court. In 1921, Eli and Violet were living near Chilliwack, British Columbia.

Violet later worked as a stenographer and became Archie’s secretary. She moved to San Francisco in July 1925.

After Violet and Eli were divorced, Eli moved from Canada to the United States. He died in New York in 1950.

Archie and Violet after Marriage

In the 1930 United States census, Archie and Violet were living in San Francisco. The census also listed two daughters living with them: Doreen (13) and Janet (12). (No further information is available for Janet.)

In 1933, Archie was executive vice president of the Crown Zellerbach Corporation.

Violet died in San Francisco on September 26, 1933.

After Violet died, Archie continued to live in San Francisco. He also had a bungalow at the Arrowhead Springs Spa and resort, near San Bernardino, California.

In 1940, Archie was living at the Pacific-Union Club at 1000 California Street in San Francisco.

He died at the Pacific Union Club on June 16, 1945. He was buried in Cypress Lawn Memorial Park in Colma, San Mateo County.

Archie did not have any children with either Sadie or Violet. However, he adopted Violet’s daughter, Barbara Doreen Yale Smith (often called “Doreen”).
