John Neil Telford was a lumberman who lived at 786 Gilford Street in 1919.

His widow, Lily Telford, was at 786 Gilford Street in 1920.

Early Life

John Neil Telford was born in Hamilton, Ontario on September 6, 1855. His parents were William D. Telford (1830-1881) and Eliza Jane White (1834–1902).

On October 5, 1887; in Decorah, Iowa, John married Lillie (“Lily”) Mary Weber. Lily was born in Wisconsin on February 5, 1862. Her parents were Nicholas Francis Weber (1816–1865) and Sophia Rudio (1829–1919).

John and Lily were still in Decorah in 1900.

In 1903, John, along with his brothers and several other associates, incorporated the Telford Lumber Company to operate a sawmill business in Prince Albert, Northwest Territories.

The business was somewhat successful, but it faced competition from other large operations. In April 1905, a fire destroyed the mill. The Telfords rebuilt the mill, but they lacked operating capital and, by the end of 1905, they had sold out to Winton Brothers.

John first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1907. He was living at 1044 West Ninth Avenue, and he was operating a sawmill business with Isaac Bertram Flater (1872-1947).

After the turn of the century, the smaller mills – such as the Sanderson, Telford Brothers, and Cowan mills – were dwarfed by two commercial enterprises, the Sturgeon Lake Lumber Company, which began operations in 1902, and the Prince Albert Lumber Company, opened by a syndicate of American businessmen in 1905. [Footnote 78: This company was able to purchase many of the timber berths owned by the Telford mill, which burned in the spring of 1905. See The Saskatchewan Times, 20 April 1905 ―Saw-Mill Destroyed by Fire. Telford‘s Lumber Mill completely gutted. To the value of $100,000 buildings and machinery were totally ruined. Started in the sawdust carriers. Although partially covered by insurance they will not be able to take part in this season‘s work. Owing to the fire almost 100 men are thrown out of employment and the loss of one of the most complete and up-to-date saw mills in the North West will considerably reduce the output of the season‘s cut.” A similar passage appears in Forest Prairie Edge: Place History in Saskatchewan, by Merle Massie; Winnipeg, University of Manitoba Press, 2014, unpaged electronic edition: https://books.google.ca/books?id=DOFXAwAAQBAJ&pg=PT131#v=onepage&q&f=false.

By autumn of the same year, the Telfords had rebuilt the plant but in doing so had left themselves without sufficient working capital. One of Prince Albert’s three major lumber operations sat idle,, and for the community, just lately incorporated into the fabric of the Dominion as part of the new province of Saskatchewan, the future suddenly looked bleak. . . . By Christmas of 1905, Winto Brothers had bought out Telford Brothers and had established the Prince Albert Lumber Company.”
