John Wellington Paxman was a bricklayer, streetcar driver and interurban railway superintendent, and manager of bathing houses in Vancouver. He lived at 1940 Beach Avenue in 1914.

John Wellington Paxman was born on August 21, 1867, in Parkhill, Ontario. His father was Adam Paxman (1826-1896). His mother was Annis Jane Fyke (1832-1915).

In 1871 and 1881 John was living with his parents. By 1891 he was in Vancouver, working as a bricklayer.

In 1894 and 1895 his occupation was “motorneer.” By 1896 he was a “motorman” for the Consolidated Railway and Light Company, a short-lived company that operated streetcars in Vancouver and trains to New Westminster. It later became part of the British Columbia Electric Railway.

On September 1, 1896, in Vancouver, he married Albura Brown. She was born on June 8, 1880 (or 1879), in Jacksonville, Carleton County, New Brunswick. Her father was James Price Brown (1840-1912). Her mother was Mary Ann (possibly Holder) (1836-1891).

According to the 1899 Vancouver directory, John was a miner.

In 1900 he was a motorman or train driver for the British Columbia Electric Railway. He later became assistant traffic superintendent for the B.C.E.R.

From 1914 to 1932 John was the manager of bath houses for the City of Vancouver, including the English Bay Bathing Pavilion.

Albura died in New Westminster, British Columbia, on March 9, 1921. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

John was retired by 1933. He died in Vancouver on July 2, 1948. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

John and Albura had a daughter.

 

Annis Eirene (Irene) Paxman

Annis Eirene (Irene) Paxman ws born in Vancouver on August 14, 1897.

On March 17, 1920, in Vancouver, she married George Cockburn Duns, who as a ??? He was born in Newcastle on Tyne, England, on October 15, 1895. His father was John Duns. His mother was Ann Stewart.

Annis and George Lived in Vancouver from the 1920s through the 1950s.

George died in Vancouver on January 9, 1962.

Annis died in Vancouver on August 16, 1964.

Annis and George had a daughter: Donna Albura Paxman, who married George S. Hansen. They were living in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, in 1964, and in Pointe Claire, Quebec, in 1964.

Funeral service Thursday at 3 p.m. in Simmons and McBride Funeral Chapel, Broadway at Maple St., Rev. George Turpin D.D., officiating. Cremation at Garden Chapel, Ocean View. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the B.C. Cancer Fund.”
