Samuel Huxley Marshall was a musician and music teacher. He lived at 1075 Denman Street from 1908 to 1925. His wife, Ada, who was also a musician, lived at 1075 Denman Street in 1926.

 

Early Life

Samuel Huxley Marshall was born on July 11, 1848, in Brampton, Ontario. His parents were William Marshall (1804-1883) and Anna Huxley (1815-1902).

In 1871 and 1876, Samuel was working as a machinist.

 

Marriage to Ada Jarvis

On September 27, 1876, in Orangeville, Ontario, Samuel married Ada Jarvis. She was born on April 24, 1858 (or 1859), in Newmarket, Ontario. Her parents were James William Jarvis (1810-1899) and Jane Smith (born about 1825).

In 1881, Samuel and Ada were living in Kincardine, Ontario. Samuel was a musician.

In 1891, they were in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Samuel was an organist.

In 1901, they were in Kent, Ontario. Samuel was a musician.

 

To Vancouver

By 1907, Samuel and Ada had arrived in Vancouver.

Samuel first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1908. He was a musician, and he was living at 1075 Denman Street.

Samuel and Ada were friends with Arthur Ernest Mallett (1874-1960) and his wife, Eliza Georgina (called “Georgie”). Arthur and Georgie were at 1069 Denman Street in 1908. They later lived in Oak Bay, British Columbia, and Arthur Mallett was the manager of R. G. Dun and Company’s office in Victoria.

Samuel and Ada lived at 1075 Denman Street until the mid-1920s.

Samuel died in Vancouver on May 24, 1925. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Samuel and Ada had the following children.

 

William Elmo Marshall

William Elmo Marshall was born in Mount Forest, Ontario, on March 31, 1877. (He was often called “Elmo.”)

He worked as a railway telegraph operator with the Canadian Pacific Railway.

On February 26, 1919, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he married Marguerite Elizabeth McIntosh. She was born in Winnipeg on September 13, 1892. Her parents were Samuel McIntosh and Mary Ann McFadden.

Elmo studied at the National College of Chiropractic in Chicago, Illinois. He and Marguerite later moved to Vancouver, where Elmo established a chiropractic practice.

Elmo was active in Conservative politics, and he served as president of the Vancouver South Conservative Association for two years.

William died in Vancouver on December 30, 1939. He was buried in Ocean View Cemetery in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Marguerite died in Vancouver on August 15, 1960.

William and Marguerite had a son.

 

Elmo McIntosh Marshall

Elmo McIntosh Marshall obtained a Bachelor of Arts from the University of British Columbia.

He married Dora (or Doris) Margaret Batten. She was born in Vancouver on May 29, 1925. Her parents were Harold Batten and Margaret Singleton-Soames.

Elmo was a high school teacher in Kamloops, British Columbia, from 1953 to 1966.

Dora died in Osoyoos, British Columbia, on June 21, 1973. She was buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Penticton, British Columbia.

It appears that Elmo died in 2010, and that he was also buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Penticton.

 

Samuel Huxley Marshall

Samuel Huxley Marshall was born in Kincardine, Ontario on September 30, 1879. (Sometimes he was called “Huxley Marshall.”)

In 1881 and 1901 he was living with his parents.

On January 24, 1904, in Chatham, Ontario, he married Agnes May Larin. She was born on September 5, 1885. Her parents were Napoleon Larin and Annie Teresa Barr.

Agnes died in Chatham on December 3, 1925. (Some sources, including her gravestone, give her death date as 1926.) She was buried in St Anthony’s Cemetery in Chatham.

Huxley died on April 24, 1955. He was buried in St Anthony’s Cemetery in Chatham.

Mr. Marshall, who was born in Ontario, was prominent both there and in this city in musical circles. Living here for eighteen years, he taught singing for much of that time. He leaves two sons, Dr. Elmo Marshall in Vancouver, and Huxley Marshall in Chatham, Ont. He also leaves a sister, the wife of Sheriff Endicott, of Orangeville, Ontario.”
