Emmeline Moore was born Laura Emmeline Tuck about 1862 in Camborne, Cornwall, England. (She was often called “Emmeline.”) Her father was William Richard Tuck (1818-1902), who was a dental surgeon. Her mother was Sarah (Sally) Henwood (1814-after 1880).

Sally Tuck was the administrator of her father’s estate.

Marriage to Edward Moore

On February 26, 1885, in Kenwyn, Cornwall, Emmeline married Edward Head Moore, who was a surgeon. He was born in Stoke Damerel, Devon on about 1855. His parents were Alexander Moore and Anne Sampson.

In 1891, Edward became a surgeon in the Army Medical Reserve of Officers.

In 1899, Edward travelled to India as part of the response to an outbreak of bubonic plague.

In 1908 he was a surgeon major with the Royal Engineers. There is no further information about him from 1908 to 1916.

 

Emmeline in Vancouver

Emmeline and Muriel were in Vancouver from 1914 to 1916. They lived at 2058 Beach Avenue in 1914 and 1915. They were at Number 7, Carlyle Court, 541 West 14th Avenue in 1916.

In March 1916, Emmeline was training to become a member of the Women’s Volunteer Corps. The purpose of the corps was to create teams of women who could take on roles that men were not performing because they were away at war. Some of the training included skills as signallers, telegraph workers, first aid attendants and ambulance workers.

Emmeline and several other women achieved high scores in their first aid examinations.

In 1916, Edward Moore was a medical officer on the ship Karoa.

Edward died on July 10, 1916, while the ship was at Port Sudan on the Red Sea.
