Eliza Emily Hamond (wife of Alexander Magellan Gibson)

Eliza Emily Hamond 1868-1955, in Elizabeth Louisa Dawson Tompson 1841-1893; http://www.micklowe53.webspace.virginmedia.com/tompson/elizabeth1841.htm:

“Having been born in Abbots Bromley in 1868 but presumably dragged half way around the world by her seafaring parents it is hardly surprising that when she married in 1889 it was to a seaman. Being given the name Alexander Magellan Gibson he seemed destined to become a sailor like his brothers, father, uncle and maternal grandfather.

Both George Gibson and his wife Catherine Hooper had been born on St Mary’s in the Scilly Isles. By 1891 George had retired as a master mariner and the family were living at 351 Old Chester Road Tranmere. Having married 2 years previously, Eliza and Alexander were living at 328 Old Chester Road, Alexander working as a purser on a mail steamer.

By 1901 the couple had moved to London and were living at 15 Eartham Grove, West Ham, Alexander now a superintendent steward. Two years later they emigrated to Canada. In April 1909 they can be found in the records for border crossings between Canada and the US, leaving Winnipeg Manitoba to move to Seattle, Washington where Alexander describes himself as a restaurateur. It obviously was a failure as the Canadian 1911 census shows them living at “1808 Beach” [sic: 1807 Beach], Vancouver City, British Columbia. Although having no children of their own, niece Jessie Dorothy Kennedy was staying with them plus a “domestic”. It is impossible to read what Alexander’s occupation was. [It was “manager”; “skating rink.”]

Alexander died 22nd December 1940 aged 80 and Eliza on 20th September 1955 aged 86.”
