Note: 2044 Comox Street was actually west of 2050 Comox Street. This is unusual, because the street numbers normally get larger as you go farther west. (From 1904 to 1907, the Vancouver directories did list the address as 2054 Comox Street, but they used 2044 Comox Street from 1907 to 1931.)

Note on the architect and builder

The head of the architectural firm of Dalton and Company was William Tinniswood Dalton (1854-1931), who lived at 1972 Robson Street from 1904 to 1919.

According to the building permit, the builder was David Kent Brookes (sometimes spelled “Brooks”), who was born in Kingston, Ontario, on June 17, 1875. His father was Thomas Stone Brookes (1842-1922), who was a building contractor. David was a carpenter in Vancouver in the early 1900s. On April 22, 1901, in Vancouver, he married Alberta (“Bertie”) Storms. In 1906, they went to live in the San Francisco area of California. David died in San Mateo, California on December 8, 1939. Bertie died in San Francisco on May 7, 1966. Further information appears in the sources section, below.

  5. Thanks – I’ve updated the building permit in our online permits database. The original handwritten ledger that the entries were transcribed from can be challenging at times to decipher, especially when the clerk originally had a very lazy hand when writing…
