Winter, William Frederick (1874-after 1940)

William Frederick Winter was a restaurant owner and caterer. He was at 1174 Denman Street in 1918 and 1919.

 

Before Vancouver

He was born on December 22, 1874, in London, England.

By the late 1890s, it appears that he was living in Washington State.

William married Alice Maud Hicks. She was born on February 9, 1865 in Chatham, Ontario. Her parents were Timothy Thomas Hicks (1824-1892) and Mary Maria Drulard (1831-1907).

 

To Vancouver

William first appeared in the Vancouver directory in 1907. He was living at 927 Seymour Street, and was operating the Granville Restaurant at 762 Granville Street.

From 1909 to 1917, William was at 826 Howe Street, and he was the proprietor of a series of cafes.

In 1918 and 1919, he was at 1174 Denman Street. He and J.W. Unsworth were running “Ye Olde England Fish Ship” at 619 Robson Street.

 

To Washington State

About 1919, William moved to Washington State.

In 1924, William applied to become a naturalized United States citizen. He received his citizenship on May 28, 1927.

In 1930, William and Alice were living in Seattle. William had a catering business.

In 1940, William and Alice were living at 1235 North Third Avenue in Seattle. William operated the Alley Cat Cafe at 98 Union Street.

Alice died in Seattle on February 25, 1941. She was buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Seattle.

On August 9, 1941, in Skagit County, Washington, William married Martha M. Eva Tonkin. She was born about 1896 in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta or in Battleford, Saskatchewan (both of which were then part of the North West Territories). Her parents were James Stevenson and Mary Guthrie. It appears that she died in August 1986.

Nor further information is available for William at this time.

 

William and Alice had a daughter.

 

Alice Grace Winter

Alice Grace Winter was born in Ellensburgh, Washington, in 1895 of 1897. On May 27, 1917, in Vancouver, she married William Harold Moore. He was born on October 27, 1891, either in Lewiston, Maine or in New Brunswick. His parents were Frank E. Moore and Flora Maud Seely Stickney.

William and Alice had two children: Rae Joyce Moore (1918-1923) and Lois June Moore (1920-2014).

William and Alice were divorced. William died in Vancouver on November 4, 1946.

Alice married Carl Curtis Pursell (1903–1962).

Alice died on September 19, 1969.
