Ralph Johnstone Wilson was a foreman at the Vancouver World newspaper. He lived at 1120 Denman Street in 1917.

The Vancouver directory also has a listing for E.J. Wilson, a printer who lived at 1120 Denman Street in 1917. It appears that these are duplicate listings for the same person (that is “E.J. Wilson” should probably be “R.J. Wilson”).

Ralph Johnstone Wilson

Ralph Johnstone Wilson was born on March 13, 1873, in Blanshard, Perth County, Ontario. His father was John Wilson. His mother was Elizabeth Kennedy.

In 1881, Ralph was living with his parents in Blanshard.

By 1910, Ralph was in Vancouver, working as a foreman at the Vancouver World newspaper.

On November 21, 1910, in Vancouver, Ralph married Ella Josephine Moore, who was a widow. She was born in Nova Scotia on March 11, about 1871. Ella’s father was John Kane. (Some sources say that Ella’s surname was Conners or Kinnear.) Ella’s mother was Mary Moray.

It is not certain what happened to Ralph. By the late 1920s, he did not appear in the Vancouver directories. Ella appeared as “Mrs. Ella Wilson”; later she was described as a widow.

Ella’s Earlier Marriage to William Cady Moore

Ella first marriage was to William Cady Moore, a Canadian Pacific Railway telegraph operator who lived at 2006 Beach Avenue from 1903 to 1905. William was born in the United States, but further details of his family and birth information are not available. William died sometime between 1903 and 1910. (Some further information appears on the page for William Cady Moore.)

An unusual advertisement appeared in the Victoria Daily Colonist on September 28, 1904. It is not certain that this relates to the W.C. Moore at 2006 Beach Avenue in Vancouver.

It appears that Rose Williams was married to George Williams, who was a telegraph operator in Parksville, British Columbia.

There was another W.C. Moore connection with San Francisco in 1904, but it is not certain that this relates to the W.C. Moore in Vancouver. The William C. Moore in San Francisco was a 31-year-old railroad switchman. He was killed in a railway accident in on October 12, 1904. He was buried in Cypress Lawn Memorial Park in Colma, San Mateo, California. William’s mother, Louisa, sued to recover damages for the loss of her son. It is not clear what happened as a result of the lawsuit.

William and Ella Moore did not appear in the Vancouver directories from 1905 until 1908. There was a W.C. Moore living at number 4 of “The Marquis,” an apartment house at 157-181 East Lorne Street, just east of Main Street. It is not certain that this is William Cady Moore.

Harold Cady Moore

William and Ella had a son, Harold Cady Moore. He was born in Vancouver on July 1, 1903. On October 1, 1938, in Vancouver, Howard married Dorothy Alene Gow. She was born about 1907 in Vancouver. Her father was Walter Melvin Gow (1878-1961). Her mother was Gertrude Amelia Coughtrey (1881-1972).

In 1949, Harold and Dorothy were living at 655 West King Edward Avenue. Harold was a salesman for W.M. Gow (probably his father-in-law’s business).

Harold died in Vancouver on August 16, 1964.

Ralph and Ella in Vancouver

After their marriage, Ralph J Wilson and Ella lived in Vancouver.

In 1913, Ralph was the president of the Vancouver Press Club. He continued to work for the Vancouver World, and he lived in Vancouver until at least 1921, although further details of his life are unavailable.

By 1929, Ella was working as a telephone operator for the Canadian Pacific Railway.

Ella continued to live in Vancouver through the 1940s.

She died in Vancouver on March 3, 1949. She was buried in Ocean View Cemetery in Vancouver. Her son, Harold Cady Moore, was the informant on her death certificate.
