Rainsford, Benjamin C. (1855-1928)

Benjamin C. Rainsford was a wholesale fruit merchant. He lived at 1047 Denman Street in 1905 and 1906 and at 2000 Beach Avenue in 1907 and 1908.

Benjamin C. Rainsford was born on about 1855 in Grassy Point, Ontario. (The spelling of his middle name sometimes appears as “Clewes,”or “Clews,” or “Cleves.”)

He married Harriet Lucinda Akin (sometimes spelled Aken or Aiken). She was born on November 30, 1853, probably in Quebec.

In 1898, Benjamin was living at 201 MacLaren Street in Ottawa, Ontario.

(The federal government later expropriated this house, along with all the others in the area. It became the site of the Supreme Court of Canada.)

In the 1901 Canada census, Harriet was in Ottawa, along with her son, Clifford. (For unknown reasons, Benjamin does not appear in the census listing for this family; he may have been away.)

Benjamin first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1902. He was a fruit merchant with Tom Albert Machan (1867-1943). Benjamin was living at 116 Georgia Street.

The Rainsfords made several trips to California in the early 1900s. In 1901, Benjamin travelled by himself to San Francisco. In 1907, he and Harriet went to San Diego. In 1908 they travelled to Santa Monica.

By 1913, Anderson Littlehailes and Guy Chellis were operating the Rainsford wholesale fruit business.

In 1917, Benjamin and Harriet moved to the United States. Their contact person was Benjamin’s brother-in-law, D.E. Carman, who lived at 506 Sprague Avenue in Spokane, Washington.

In the 1920 United States census, Benjaming and Harriet were living in Spokane. They later moved to California.

Benjamin died in California in 1928.

Harriet died in California in 1930.

Benjamin and Harriet had a son.

 

Clifford Akin Rainsford

Clifford Akin Rainsford was born on November 11, 1883, in Ottawa, Ontario.

On May 25, 1915, in Vancouver, he married Gertrude Elizabeth Mavity. She was born on December 19, 1887, in Watford, Ontario. Her father was Alexander Mavity (1857-1945). Gertrude’s mother was Annie Alice Lilian Hayhurst (1868-1962).

Clifford and Gertrude moved to the United States. When Clifford registered with the United States military draft, he was an oil operator, living in Billings, Montana.

By 1930, Clifford and Gertrude were in Santa Monica, California. Clifford was a real estate salesman.

In 1931, Clifford and Gertrude became naturalized United States citizens.

In 1940, they were in Altadena, in Los Angeles County, California. Clifford was a salesman with a pest control company.

Clifford died in Los Angeles on June 21, 1953.

Gertrude died in Los Angeles on February 7, 1965.

Clifford and Gertrude had a son, John Alexander Rainsford. He was born in Vancouver on May 12, 1916. He lived in California for most of his life. John died in Carlsbad, California on November 17, 2007.

He was born May 12, 1916 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He attended school as a youth in Cambria, California, then went on to UCLA and Woodbury College. John and his wife, Mary, made their home in Malibu for many years. He owned a manufacturing business until his retirement at which time he and Mary moved to Rancho Santa Fe. They were both very active in the Rancho Santa Fe community. John was a director of the Rancho Santa Fe Community Services District for over 20 years. A pond which is part of the district’s water services is named for John. John was a member of the Optimist Club of Santa Monica and the Santa Monica Power Squadron. He also belonged to the Palisades Men’s Club and prior to his retirement he belonged to Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades. Later he became a member of the Rancho Santa Fe Country Club. John was also proud to be an honorary member of the Rotary Club of Encinitas. John’s hobbies were stamp collecting, fishing, golf, gardening and boating. He and Mary also traveled extensively around the world. John was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, and his daughter, Susan. After the death of his wife, John formed the John and Mary Rainsford Charitable Foundation which substantially supports the San Diego Senior Community Centers. San Diego Community Centers provides meals, shelter and health care to many thousands of low income seniors in the San Diego area. The foundation also provides ongoing support to the charitable activities of the Rotary Club of Encinitas. Survivors include John’s son, Jeffrey and daughter-in-law Kinee of Maui, Hawaii; grandson Chad of Thousand Oaks; and stepdaughter, Linda Nelson, of Oceanside, and her husband, Bob, and family; John’s cousin, Marjorie Archer of Carlsbad and her husband, Jack, and family, and many other family members throughout the United States and Canada. A Memorial Service for the immediate family will take place at a later date. The family wishes to thank John’s caregivers who helped him in his later years with great kindness and devotion . It is suggested that donations be made m John’s memory to a charitable organization of your choice.”
