Nicholson, Frederick Walter (1880 – after 1919)

Frederick Walter Nicholson was the managing director of a construction company called Norton Griffiths Company Ltd. He lived at 2080 Haro Street in 1912; 1900 Comox Street from 1913 to 1914; and 1859 Robson Street in 1915.

 

Family Background

Frederick Walter Nicholson was born in 1880 in Truro, Cornwall, England. His parents were Thomas Ballans Nicholson (1851-1925) and Georgiana Penelope Pile (1855-1939). Thomas Nicholson was a Wesleyan minister (apparently from Dublin, Ireland, although there are several records showing his birth in Yorkshire in England). Georgiana Penelope Pile was from Dublin. Thomas and Georgiana were married in Dublin in 1875.

Thomas died on September 17, 1925.

Early Life

Frederick went to Kingswood College in Bath, England [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingswood_School]; he graduated in 1895.

Later he studied engineering in London, and then he worked for the London contracting firm of Holloway Brothers [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holloway_Brothers_(London)], where he stayed for four years.

Next, he went to New York City, where he worked for four years with the steel contracting business of Thompson-Starrett Company [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thompson-Starrett_Co.].

In 1904, he became associated with the J.G. White Company of New York City [Achievements of the J. G. White Engineering Corporation and Associates in American and Foreign fields, https://archive.org/details/AchievementsOfTheJ.G.WhiteEngineeringCorporationAndAssociatesIn].

He worked with J.G. White’s business in London, England until 1910; then he became associated with the London building contracting firm of Griffiths & Company Ltd.

 

First Marriage

In early 1908, Frederick married Violet Mary Harris. She was a daughter of Frank Harris, who was a partner in T. H. Harris & Company, a London soap manufacturing business.

Frederick and Violet had a daughter, Violet Katrine Nicholson, who was born in England in September 1909.

 

To Canada

Frederick first came to Canada about 1910, as the managing director of Norton Griffiths Company Ltd., which was a Canadian branch of Griffiths & Company. Norton Griffiths built many buildings in Vancouver and elsewhere in Canada.

In 1911, Frederick and Violet sailed to Ketchikan, Alaska on S.S. Princess May.

It appears that Frederick moved back to England.

On November 21, 1918, in London, England, he married Maidie Kathleen Munton. She was the daughter of Percy Blair Munton.

In 1926, a constructional engineer named Frederick Walter Nicholson, of Elmcroft, Rickmansworth, England was the subject of a receiving order in bankruptcy. Rickmansworth is a small town in Hertfordshire, about 20 miles northwest of central London: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rickmansworth. It is not clear if this proceeding deals with the Frederick Walter Nicholson who had been in Vancouver.

Maidie Kathleen Nicholson died on April 14, 1981.
