Alexander Henderson was a jeweller who lived at 1040 Denman Street in 1905.

Alexander Henderson was born in Stirling, Stirlingshire, Scotland on January 10, 1865. His parents were Gilbert Henderson and Isabella Grant.

Alexander immigrated to Canada about 1889.

 

Life in Ontario

On October 1, 1890, in Arnprior, Ontario, he married Jessie Orpha Banning. (Her middle name was sometimes spelled “Orpah.”)

Jessie was born in Arnprior on April 11, 1867. Her father was William Benjamin Banning (1847-1910). Jessie’s mother was Margaret Waite (1847-1934).

Alexander and Jessie stayed in Ontario throughout the 1890s. In 1895, Alexander’s watchmaker shop was at the corner of John Street and Rock Lane in Arnprior.

In 1897, burglars broke into Alexander’s store in Arnprior and stole watches and other jewellery.

Alexander and Jessie were still in Ontario when their daughter, Margaret, was born in 1899.

 

Time in Phoenix, British Columbia

By 1900 Alexander had moved to Phoenix, British Columbia, a booming town that relied on the local copper mines for its success.

Alexander’s store was on Dominion Avenue in Phoenix.

Alex built a house in an area called the “New York claim.”

In the fall of 1900, Jessie arrived in Phoenix.

On the evening of January 17, 1901, a fire started in McBean and Company’s dry goods store in Phoenix. The citizens used blasting powder to demolish nearby buildings, preventing the fire from spreading throughout the community.

Alexander’s jewellery store was one of the blown-up buildings.

After the fire, Alexander set up a temporary site at the local post office to receive watch and jewellery repair items.

By March 1901, Alexander had a new location for his business, next to the P. Burns market, across from the Brooklyn Hotel.

Move to Vancouver

Alexander moved to Vancouver in late November 1901.

He first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1902. He was a jeweller with Davidson Brothers.

Alexander did not appear in the Vancouver directories after 1908.

He apparently died before the time of the 1911 Canada census, but no further details are available.

 

Jessie’s Return to Ontario

In 1911, Jessie and her children were living at 507 Bay Street in Ottawa, Ontario. Jessie was a boarding house operator.

Jessie died in Ottawa on October 21, 1917. She was buried in the Albert Street Cemetery in Arnprior.

Alexander and Jessie had the following children.

 

Isabella Mary Henderson

Isabella Mary Henderson was born in Arnprior, Ontario, on July 30, 1895.

She never married.

She died on September 15, 1928, in Ottawa, Ontario.

She was buried on September 18, 1928, at the Albert Street Cemetery in Arnprior.

 

Margaret Grant Henderson

Margaret Grant Henderson was born in Almonte, Ontario, on July 17, 1899.

On September 1, 1920, in Ottawa, Ontario, she married John Munro Knox, who was a hardware salesman. He was born in Carleton Place, Ontario, on January 8, 1898. His father was James Clark Knox. John’s mother was Sarah Ann Munro.

In April 1918, John had enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve as a gunner during the First World War. He was discharged under the demobilization authority on March 22, 1919.

In the 1921 Canada census, John and Margaret were living with John’s mother at 111 Florence Street in Ottawa. (Margaret’s sister, Velma, was also living there).

Margaret died on September 19, 1954, in Ottawa, Ontario. She was buried in the Pinegrove Cemetery in Pine Grove, Lanark County, Ontario.

John died in Clearwater, Florida, on January 31, 1975. He was buried in the Pinegrove Cemetery.

 

Velma Jessie Henderson

Velma Jessie Henderson was born in Vancouver on April 11, 1902.

It appears that she never married.

She died in April 1990 in Ottawa, Ontario.

 

Lillian Ruth Henderson

Lillian Ruth Henderson was born in Vancouver on April 19, 1904.

On May 25, 1934, in Vancouver, she married William Alvin Barr. He was born in Brussels, Ontario, on November 3, 1882. His father was Robert Barr. William’s mother was Mary Hamilton.

William was the proprietor of Dollar Cleaners at 3341 West Fourth Avenue, as well as the Brussels Court Apartments at 2026 Franklin Street in Vancouver.

William later worked as a self-employed contractor. He died in Vancouver on May 8, 1951. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Lillian died in Mission, British Columbia, on January 31, 1984. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.

 

Jean Alexanderia Henderson

Jean Alexanderia Henderson was born in Vancouver on May 28, 1907.

She became an elementary school teacher.

On December 20, 1941, in Vancouver, Jean married Richard Thomas Begley, who was a policeman with the City of Vancouver. He was born in Vancouver on September 22, 1911. His father was Joseph James Begley. Richard’s mother was Sarah Selina Llewelyn.

Jean died in Vancouver on January 1, 1969.

Richard died in Abbottsford, British Columbia, on February 13, 1995.
