Gilling, Norman Victor (1884-possibly 1966)

Norman Victor Gilling was a lawyer who lived at 1934 Haro Street in 1920.

Norman Victor Gilling was born in 1884 in Knaresborough, Yorkshire, England. His father was Arthur William Gilling (possibly 1856-1926), who was a solicitor. His mother was Alice Wilhelmina Walton (1865-1909). Arthur and Alice were married in Harrogate, Yorkshire, on October 5, 1882.

Arthur’s had his law offices in Knaresborough and Harrogate. In 1907 and 1908, Norman was also working as a solicitor in Arthur’s office.

(Arthur later stopped practicing as a solicitor after questions arose about his role in forming a debt-collection company. He was also suspended from practice for twelve months. It is not clear whether he returned to practice or not.)

In 1910, Norman married Fanny Beatrice Proctor. She was born in 1886 in Wetherby, Yorkshire. Norman and Fanny travelled to Canada in 1910, and by 1911 they were in Vancouver. Norman appeared at the following addresses in Vancouver.

1911 number 2, 1130 Granville Street (possibly Clowes Building)
1912 number 5, 1199 Bidwell Street (Aldine Apartments)
1913 1901 Pendrell Street (Gilford Court)
1914 to 1919 1213 Beach Avenue
1920 1934 Haro Street
1921 Caulfeilds (West Vancouver)
1922 no address under Vancouver names
1923 not listed under Vancouver names

In 1915, Norman leased the house at 1213 Beach Avenue to Dr. Samuel Charles Corbett and his family. (Dr. Corbett’s widow, Gertrude Ethel Corbett, lived at 1877 Comox Street in 1919 and 1920.)

Fanny was involved in the Vancouver Woman’s Musical Club. She was one of performers in a program that featured local composers.

By 1916, Norman was a partner in the Vancouver law firm of Scrimgeour, Hogg and Gilling (John Murray Scrimgeour, John Pitcairn Hogg and Victor Gilling). (More information appears on the page for John Pitcairn Hogg.)

From 1919 to 1922, Norman was in a law firm with Stewart S. Tufts.

Norman did not appear in the Vancouver directories after 1922.

He had a law partnership in London, England, with Oswald Chippindale. Mr. Chippindale was from Knaresborough, near Harrogate, so Norman may have known him from his days in Harrogate. They dissolved the partnership on February 5, 1923.

It appears that Norman was living in England in 1930. He may also have gone on a trip to New Zealand in 1931.

Norman may have died in London, England, in 1966.

Fanny may have died in London, England, in 1973.

Norman and Fanny had a daughter.

Muriel W. Gilling

Muriel W. Gilling (her middle name may have been Wilhelmina) was born in British Columbia, possibly in Vancouver, in February 1911.

She may have married Keith F. Thompson in 1936, in Bromley, Kent, England.

Muriel may have died in 1997 in Worcestershire, England.

An application was duly made by C. H. Heddon, of 1, Station Bridge, Harrogate, Yorkshire, solicitor, that Arthur William Gilling, of 2, Princess Square, Harrogate, solicitor, might be required to answer the allegations contained in an affidavit which accompanied the application, and that his name might be struck off the roll of solicitors of the Supreme Court, or that he might be suspended from practice as a solicitor, or that such order might be made as the Court should think right, on the ground that the matters of fact stated in the affidavit constituted professional misconduct on the part of the said Arthur William Gilling in his capacity of solicitor of the Supreme Court of Judicature in England.

The charges made were:

(1) That the respondent procured the formation of “Patten’s Agency, Limited,” being a company formed (inter alia) to undertake the recovery of debts for its subscribers, and that he did so with a view to its employment by him as an adjunct to his business as a solicitor.

(2) That whether the respondent procured the formation of the company or not, he, with the like view, from its inception financed and controlled it.

(3) That the respondent commenced and carried on certain actions for the recovery of debts placed in the hands of the company’ for collection upon terms which were champertous and improper.

(4) That the respondent by the agency of the company systematically solicited debt-collecting business, and that he did so without disclosing his connection with the company.

. . .

Darling, J. The conclusion of the Court is that the respondent has been guilty of professional misconduct, and with regard to his punishment we have been told that he is not at this moment practising, having disposed of the business which he had. But apparently he has still a certificate with which he might practise. There is nothing before us to shew whether he has finally retired from practice or not, and we think that it should be put out of his power to practise for some time, even should he desire to do so. The order of the Court is that he be suspended for twelve months and pay the costs of the inquiry and of this motion.”
