Colquhoun, Adelaide Alicia (1856-1918)

Mrs. A. Colquhoun was the widow of Andrew John Colquhoun. She lived at 2056 Beach Avenue in 1916 and 1917.

It appears that she was born Adelaide Alicia Thom in Quebec City, on November 18, probably around 1856. (Her year of birth is uncertain; various sources range between 1850 and 1867.)

Adelaide’s father was William Thom, who was the head of Thom’s Commercial Academy in Quebec. The academy was an English-language private school that Mr. Thom operated from his home at 19 Ste.-Angèle Street in Quebec.

Adelaide’s mother was Anna Catherine Smythe.

Until the 1890s, Adelaide was not married. She lived with her family in Quebec City.

She first appeared in the Vancouver directory in 1894. She was living at 542 Georgia Street.

On September 23, 1896, in Vancouver, she married Andrew John Colquhoun, who was a mining engineer. He was born in Berry, near Manchester, England, probably on June 16, 1863. His father was Walter Colquhoun. His mother was Martha Morrison.

By 1901, Andrew and Adelaide were living in the Savona area of British Columbia, near Kamloops. Andrew was a consulting engineer for the Copper Creek Development Mining Company Limited.

The managing director of the company was Geoffrey Francis Monckton (1865-1927). He was a mining engineer who was living with Andrew and Adelaide at the time of the 1901 Canada census.

In February 1905, Andrew’s and Adelaide’s son, William Archibald George Colquhoun, was born in Spokane, Washington.

In 1909, Andrew, Adelaide and their son (called “Archie”) arrived at Victoria, British Columbia, on a trip from Salina Cruz in southern Mexico.

By 1911, Adelaide was a widow. She was living near Kamloops, British Columbia, along with her son.

In 1912, Adelaide travelled to Ocean Park, California. She was apparently planning to stay permanently in the United States.

However, in 1916 and 1917, Adelaide was back in Canada. She was living at 2056 Beach Avenue in Vancouver.

Adelaide died in Kamloops, British Columbia, on April 18, 1918. She was buried in the Pleasant Street Cemetery in Kamloops.

Andrew and Adelaide had a son.

William Archibald George Colquhoun

William Archibald George Colquhoun was born in Spokane, Washington on February 6, 1905.

By 1923, he was living in Windsor, Nova Scotia.

On June 16, 1923, in Hantsport, Nova Scotia, he married Myrtle Kathleen Burgoyne. She was born on June 12, 1897, in Windsor, Nova Scotia. Her father was Walter Scott. Her mother was May Rosetta Hiltz.

Myrtle died in Pennsylvania in 1951.

William later married Clara Jeanette Pearse. By 1963, William and Clara were living on Salt Spring Island in British Columbia.

William died at Ganges, on Salt Spring Island, on October 19, 1963.

No further information is available for Clara at this time.
