John Edmond Charnock was a mechanical engineer. He lived at 2000 Beach Avenue in 1913.

He was born in 1884 in West Bromwich, near Birmingham, England. His father was Frank Austin Charnock. His mother was Annie Edgington.

In 1911, he became a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in Britain.

By 1912, John had arrived in Vancouver. On July 11, 1912, in Vancouver, he married Florence Finch McGaul. It appears that Florence was born in 1869 in Eccles (or Salford), near Manchester, England. Her father was Edward Charles Weeden; her mother was Florence Wainhouse. In 1903, in Cardiff, Wales, Florence had married William Henry McGaul. It appears that he was born in 1874 in Birkenhead, near Liverpool in 1874. William apparently died in 1910.

In 1913, John was an employee of Vivian Gas Engine Works at 1090 6th West Avenue.

William “Will” Vivian (1890-1965) had started the shop in 1909, at the young age of 19. The business became a large supplier of marine and stationary gas and diesel engines, as well as a maker of military equipment during the Second World War and the Korean War.

By 1914, John had started his own machine shop, just two blocks west of Will Vivian’s business on West Sixth Avenue.

In 1914, John’s Vancouver address appeared in the List of Members for the Institution of Mechanical Engineers:

John and Florence did not appear in the Vancouver directories after 1914. It appears that they went to live in England.

By 1922, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers gave John’s address as “Little Hey, Pirbright, Woking”:

In 1937, John was the executor of the estate of Frances Jane Paxton. The London Gazette notice described John as a civil engineer of “Little Hey Pirbright, Surrey.”

John was the chairman of two companies that were wound up in 1962: Window Arts Limited and Window Dressing Services Limited:

It appears that John died after 1962, probably in England. No further information is available at this time.
