Babcock, Everett Phipps (1874-1921)

Everett Phipps Babcock was an architect. He lived at 2067 Pendrell Street in 1914 and 1915.

He was born in New York on June 13, 1874. His father was Phoenix Babcock (1846-1921); his mother was Emma Frances Phipps.

Everett began his architectural career in Tacoma. He worked as an assistant supervising architect for Jardine, Kent and Jardine, a New York architectural firm that was overseeing the building of the Carnegie Library in Tacoma. He later worked with Ambrose J. Russell, who was a British architect. Russell and Babcock designed many other buildings in Washington, including the Washington State Governor’s mansion in 1908. [Washington Governor’s Mansion, Wikipedia article, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Governor’s_Mansion.]

On June 5, 1908, in Montclair, New Jersey, Everett married Clara Mae Delano. She was born in New York on December 12, 1868. Her father was Frank Delano; her mother was Sara B. Snow.

In 1911, Everett moved to Vancouver to supervise several projects with the firm of Russell, Babcock and Rice. One significant building was the Weart Building (now called the Standard Building), at the southeast corner of Hastings Street and Richards Street.

By about 1916, he had moved to Portland, Oregon, where he stayed until 1923.

About 1923, he moved to Pasadena, California. Clare’s brother Henry Lewis Delano (1871-1962), had been living in Pasadena since about 1919. Henry was the vice president of a real estate firm.

Everett was a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Southern California Architectural Club. He also belonged to the Valley Hunt Club, the Annandale Golf Club, and the Pasadena Garden Club.

In 1928, he was living at 855 Rosalind Road, in San Marino, California. On May 17, 1928, after going to the Pasadena Hospital for an operation to remove his tonsils, he died unexpectedly on the operating table.

Clare continued to live in California. She died in Los Angeles on September 8, 1955.
