Anderson, James J. (1842-possibly 1918)

James J. Anderson was a mechanical engineer. He lived at 1849 Robson Street in 1911.

He was born in Scotland, possibly in Edinburgh, in May, about 1842. He went to the United States about 1874. At some point before 1880, he married Elizabeth McKay, who was also from Scotland, possibly from Wick, which is in the far north of Scotland.

In 1900, the family was living in South Haven, a port village on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan.

By 1910, the family had moved to California, and they were in Vancouver by 1911. It appears that their time in Canada was quite short: by 1915, and possibly earlier, they were back in California.

It appears that James died in California in 1918, and that he was buried in Santa Ana Cemetery in California.

Some children of James J. Anderson and Elizabeth McKay:

Jessie Anderson

Jessie Anderson was born in Illinois about 1872. On May 15, 1893, in South Haven, Michigan, she married Marion Howard Patrick. He was born about 1872 in Illinois. His father was R.H. Patrick; his mother was Emma Mead.

In 1900, Marion and Jessie were living in Chadwick village in Illinois Marion was a druggist. They had a daughter Emma, who was born about 1895, in Illinois.

Frank Anderson

Frank Anderson was born in Illinois about 1877. No further information is available for him.

Cora H. Anderson

Cora H. Anderson was born in Chicago, Illinois on April 30, probably about 1882 or 1883.

On October 10, 1903, in South Haven, Michigan, she married Daniel W. Aylworth. Daniel was born about 1853, in Hampdon, Ohio. His father was John Benezetta Aylworth; his mother was Hanna Cornelia Warner. He had been married on March 20, 1869, in Lake, Ohio, to Rosa (or Rosetta) M. Leslie.

In the mid-1880s, Daniel was living in Adrian, Michigan, where he was the manager of the Dayton Hedge Company. About that time, Adrian was known as the “fence capital of the world,” after J. Wallace Page (1843-1916) had invented a machine to make woven wire fences. In 1894, Daniel Aylworth and Nobel B. Leslie (Daniel’s brother-in-law) received a patent for making clamps on horizontal wires in wire fences.

Daniel died in Cleveland, Ohio, on April 13, 1907. By 1910, Cora was living with her parents in Long Beach, California. In 1911, she had come to Vancouver with her parents, and she was working as a clerk at David Spencer Ltd., a large department store in Vancouver.

On September 22, 1915, Cora married Luther Marvin Persons, who was a fruit rancher near Corona, California. He was born on November 13, 1871, in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. (His parents were Augustus F. Persons and Melvina Tyler, so he was a brother of Melvin Persons, who was married to Cora’s sister Lillian.)

Luther died in Pomona, California on July 11, 1943.

Cora died in Los Angeles, California, on December 9, 1963.

Luther and Cora had a son, Marvin Luther Persons, who was born on August 8, 1916. He died in California on July 19, 2005.

Eleanore H. Virgene Anderson

Eleanore (or Nellie, or Ella, or Eleanor) Anderson was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 28, about 1881 to 1885.

It appears that she was married first to a Mr. Hope.

She then married Henry Fuler in South Haven, Michigan, on September 22, 1906.

On February 25, 1909, in Los Angeles, California, she married Henry Filley Valette. Although it seems unlikely, he really was born about 1822, in Stockbridge, Massachusetts; his father was Jeremiah Valette; his mother was Abiah Mott. Henry died on October 19, 1909, in Long Beach, California.

In 1910 and 1911, Eleanor was living with her parents.

On December 3, 1918, In Long Beach, California, Eleanor married Cyrus Jones Trauger.  He was a realtor, who was born in New Jersey on September 16, 1854.

Cyrus died in Los Angeles on July 5, 1947.

Eleanor died in Los Angeles on September 15, 1957.

Lillian Violet Anderson

Lillian Anderson was born in Illinois, possibly on December 25, 1886. On January 2, 1910, she married Melvin Royal Persons, who was born in Wisconsin on March 6, 1886. His parents were Augustus F. Persons and Melvina Tyler.

Melvin and Lillian were living in Long Beach, California, with Lillian’s parents in 1910.

In 1920 and 1930, they were living in the Los Angeles area. In 1930, they were living in Pasadena, California. By 1940, they had moved to Santa Ana, in Orange County, California.

Lillian died on April 11, 1949, in Orange County.

Melvin died in Orange County on December 28, 1971.

David M. Anderson

David M. Anderson was born in Illinois in October, about 1887 or 1888.

In 1911, he was living in Vancouver with his parents, and was working as an assistant assayer.

On October 31, 1923, in Los Angeles, California, he married Gladys Ann Wallace. She was born in Colorado about 1896, possibly on June 5, 1895. Her father was John T. Wallace; her mother was Anna Breckenridge.

David may have died in 1935.

Gladys was living in Montebello Township, California, in 1940.

It appears that Gladys died in Los Angeles, on October 31, 1970.

William C. Anderson

William C. Anderson was born in Chicago, Illinois on June 21, 1888.

Marion was my ggfather and married my ggmother Jessie Anderson in 1893 in South Haven, MI. They returned to IL and in 1896 produced my grandmother Mary Emma Patrick, born 1896 in Rockford, IL. Have been unable to find anything to document her birth or her parents origins. It is also possible Jessie’s middle name was Sinclair rather than St. Clair.
