Evans, Alexander Kidd (1874-1954)

Alexander Kidd Evans was a merchant and broker who lived at 958 Denman Street from 1904 to 1905.

 

Family Background

Alexander Kidd Evans was born on May 16, 1874, in Liverpool, England. His parents were John and Hannah Evans. John Evans was a carter.  Hannah, was born about 1849 in Swansea,

Wales. Alexander had an older brother, David James Evans, who was born in Liverpool about 1872.

 

To Canada

Alexander came to Canada about 1900. When he arrived in Vancouver, he was living with the Boultbee family at 779 Bute Street.

He became the general manager of the Vancouver Agency Ltd. The company had its head office in Liverpool, and it was in the importing and commission merchant business. Colin Fred Jackson was the managing director of the company.

By 1902, Alexander’s employer was called C.F. Jackson & Co., Ltd., and it was in a business similar to that of the Vancouver Agency Ltd.

By 1906, Alexander had formed Evans, Davidson & Co., with William J. Davidson, carrying on business in the fields of brokering, importing and insurance. By 1911, he was the manager of the Vancouver Financial Corporation. By 1920, he was with the Tower Estates and Insurance Company. Later records do not show specific occupations for him.

 

Marriage to Millicent Dixon

On August 10, 1901, Alexander married Millicent Dixon. She was born in Birkenhead, near Liverpool, on April 11, 1877. Her parents were Richard Dixon and Margaret Ann Lumb.

Sometime between 1911 and 1922, Alexander and Millicent were divorced.

Alexander did not re-marry.

He died in Vancouver on March 24, 1954.

 

Millicent: Marriage to John Campbell

On June 21, 1922, at the sheriff’s office in New Westminster, British Columbia, Millicent married John Augustine Ewart Campbell. He was born on January 16, 1878, in Montreal, Quebec. His parents were John Campbell (1840-1904) and Mary Ellen Playfair.

John died in Vancouver on May 15, 1946.

Millicent died in Vancouver on March 26, 1969.

 

Alexander Evans and Millicent Dixon had two sons.

 

Brian Kenneth Evans (1903-1992)

Brian Kenneth Evans was born in Vancouver on December 9, 1903. He moved to California about 1925.

It appears that he was married to Maude, who was born in Kansas on January 17, 1896. She died in San Francisco, California, on January 19, 1977.

Brian died in San Francisco on April 15, 1992.

 

Andrew Maxwell Evans (1906-1976)

A. Maxwell Evans went to the University of British Columbia; then he went to McGill University, where he received his medical degree in 1932.

For three years in England, he studied the treatment of cancer, and he received a degree from Cambridge University in 1937.

In 1938, he returned to Vancouver, where he became the first full-time medical officer at the B.C. Cancer Institute. During the Second World War, he became a major; he served with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps in England, Italy and Holland.

He was the director of the B.C. Cancer Institute and medical director of the B.C. Cancer Foundation for 33 years; he retired in 1972.

He and his wife, Eleanor, had two sons: Vaughan Evans and Brian Evans.
