Harold George Beddeson was a commercial traveler for Kelly, Douglas’s grocery business. He lived at 1919 Beach Avenue from 1905 to 1908.

He was born on December 31, 1872, in Stamford, Lincolnshire, England. His father was John Beddeson (1844-1885), who was a brewer’s clerk; his mother was Jane Elizabeth Royce (1846-1886).

Harold arrived in Canada in about 1894. By 1900, he was living in Toronto and working as a shipper for the wholesale grocery business of Herbert P. Eckhardt and Company. He was still living in Toronto in 1901.

It appears that, sometime between 1901 and 1903, Harold married Ina Gwendolyn Mackie (often called Gwendolyn). She was born on June 8, 1873, in East Whitby, near Oshawa, Ontario. Her father was Robert John Mackie; her mother was Jane Abigail Hoitte.

He first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1902, as “P. Bedeson,” who was a traveler for Kelly, Douglas and Company. In 1903 and 1904, the directories showed him as “Harold G. Beddeson.” He was still a traveler for Kelly, Douglas and Company, and he was living at 1729 Burnaby Street.

From 1905 to 1908, he was at 1919 Beach Avenue.

In 1909, he moved to 2254 Cornwall Avenue. The Beddeson family was still there in the 1940s. However, by 1921, Harold was a patient at the Vancouver General Hospital Annex, 1283 Southwest Marine Drive, which was at the northeast corner of Hudson Street and Marine Drive.

This building started its life as John Jacob Grauer’s Grand Central Hotel in 1913. By about 1915, the hotel was no longer in business. From 1917 to 1922, the building was a Vancouver General Hospital Annex; from 1922 to 1937, it was the Provincial Home for Incurables.

From 1937, it was known as the Marpole Infirmary or the Provincial Infirmary. It stopped being used as an infirmary in 1965, and it was demolished in 1967.

In 1921, while Harold was a patient at the hospital annex, Gwendolyn also became ill and had to go into the hospital. It appears that the Beddeson children were at home. A boy from the neighbourhood brought over a rifle, and the children were engaged in target practice. While Stanford Beddeson was using the gun, it exploded, seriously injuring 11-year-old Arthur Beddeson. The police arrived and Arthur was rushed to the hospital. He later recovered.

It appears that Harold remained in hospital for all or most of the rest of his life. He died at the Provincial Infirmary on November 27, 1941. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Vancouver Daily World, Monday, October 17, 1921, page 13, “BOY TERRIBLY HURT BENEATH CAR FENDER Another in Hospital As Result of Shooting Accident Two youthful victims of accidents lie In the General Hospital today, the condition of one, Gordon Field, 3692 Commercial Drive, being regarded as serious. The youngster, alighting from a northbound Grandview street-car at Robson and Granville Street on Saturday afternoon, with his grandmother, Mrs. W. Legge, 1810 Cedar Street, is said to have run across in front of Fraser Avenue car No. 148. Caught by the fender, the boy was rolled along for some distance, and sustained a severe crushing. At the hospital today it is stated that the boy passed a poor night, and his condition is regarded as grave. Arthur Beddeson, 2254 Cornwall St., the second victim, is in the hospital with a bullet wound from a 22-calibre rifle bullet in his jaw, the result of being struck while he, in company with other boys, was engaged in target practice at his home on Sunday. Harold Smith, 2152 Cornwall Street, obtained possession of a rifle, taking it to the Beddeson home, the parents of young Beddeson being away, both father and mother being patients at the hospital. Several shots are said to have been fired by the boys, when, while the weapon was in the hands of Stanford Beddeson, it exploded, the bullet shattering the jaw of the youngster. P.C. . . . J Sutherland attended and the boy was rushed to the hospital, where it is learned that his recovery is regarded as certain.”
